Abstract: In response to the significant changes in the competitive climate of public sector higher education institutions (HEIs), the Romanian universities face the need to improve operational efficiency by implementing advanced information systems. The purpose of this paper is to provide a solution for an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system that could integrate all of a Romanian HEI's department functionalities, to propose a model that describes how the concepts of user competence and role may optimize an ERP system implementation in a Romanian HEI and to provide a possible architectural solution for developing a decision support system that can extract and report the information from the proposed ERP system.

Abstract: A spacecraft (or any particle with negligible mass) suffers a gravitational capture when its orbit changes from hyperbolic (small positive energy) around a celestial body into elliptic (small negative energy) using only gravitational forces. The force responsible for this modification in the orbit of the spacecraft is the gravitational force of the third and the fourth bodies involved in the dynamics. Those forces are equivalent of a zero cost control applied to the spacecraft, equivalent to a continuous thrust. One of the most important applications of this property is the construction of trajectories to the Moon. The concept of gravitational capture is combines with the principles of the gravity-assisted maneuver and the bi-elliptic transfer orbit, to generate a trajectory that requires a fuel consumption smaller than the one required by the Hohmann transfer. The present paper study the energy required for the ballistic gravitational capture in a dynamical model !
that has the presence of four bodies. Those bodies are assumed to follow the assumptions of the bi-circular model. In particular, the Earth-Moon-Sun-Spacecraft system is considered.

Abstract: This paper presents an approach that models programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for their effective deployment in industrial control processes. A working model is developed for automatic allocation of PLCs and formal verification of Ladder Diagram representations of control processes using the SMV (Symbolic Model Verifier) tool. Automatic resource allocation is achieved through the proposition of a digraph model for any Ladder Diagram representation of a control process, which is then translated to an XML model. The required PLC resources needed to implement a control process are extracted from the XML model. These resources are then used by a selection engine to determine from a PLC database the most appropriate PLCs or Embedded Controllers (EBCs) that can satisfy the resource requirements. Additionally, information extracted from the XML model is used to generate a formally verifiable SMV code for the system. Hence the paper focuses on the practical implementat!
ion, testing, and verification of three conceptual modules applied to a control process: The XML Model of the Control Process, the PLC Database Automatic Resource Allocation and the XML-to-SMV translator. The use of PLCs in a continuously increasing number of industries for automation of industrial processes has fueled this work. This endeavor is potentially very useful to practitioners in the PLC industry and is a precursory step in the total automation and formal verification of industrial processes.

Abstract: Environmental considerations are gaining importance in civil infrastructure design and management. In particular the transportation sector of urban civil infrastructure is regarded a major determinant of life quality and environmental sustainability. Its development and operation plans involve the employment of multiple policies, and demand multiple objectives to be met. In this paper, a policy-driven approach is presented for providing optimal investment and management plans for future network developments, by taking into account air quality criteria and in particular the carbon footprint related to vehicle emissions. Optimal network design and pricing decisions are tested in order that multiple conflicting social, economic and environmental targets to be simultaneously optimized. Under this framework, social dilemmas are revealed, while quantitative results can support decisions related to the sustainable urban development. The methodological approach presented h!
ere is based on a formulation of multi-objective, non-convex, multi-level, vector optimization programming problem. The problem's formulation nature leads to solution sets that are composing Pareto Fronts (PF). PFs, are estimated by suitably hybridized evolutionary algorithms. Insights are provided by applying the proposed framework into a part of a realistic network, for alternative problem setups.

Abstract: Due to large amount of information and the inherent intricacy, diagnosis in complex systems is a difficult task. This can be somehow simplified by taking a per-step towards categorizing the system conditions and faults. In this paper, the development and implementation of an approach that establishes class membership conditions, using a labeled training set, is described. More specifically, the use of negative recognition for classification and diagnosis of complex system faults are discussed. The adaptive recognition to achieve the classification is based on discovery of pattern features that make them distinct from objects belonging to different classes. Most of the existing approaches to fault diagnosis, particularly for large or complex systems, depend on heuristic rules. The approach proposed in this work does not resort to any heuristic rules, which makes it more suitable for diagnosis of faults in dynamic and complex systems. For evaluation purposes, using t!
he data provided by the protection simulator of a large power system, its fault diagnosis is carried out. The results of those simulations are also reported. They clearly reveal that even for complex systems, the proposed approach, based on making use of the distinctive features of encountered fault patterns, is capable of fault classification with minimal supervision.

Abstract: A fast and reliable method for categorization of patterns that may be encountered in complex systems is described. Most pattern recognition and classification approaches are founded on discovering the connections and similarities between the members of each class. In this work, a different view of classification is presented. The classification is based on identification of distinctive features of patterns. It will be shown that the members of different classes have different values for some or all of such features. The paper will also show that by making use of the distinctive features and their corresponding values, classification of all patterns, even for complex systems, can be accomplished. The classification process does not rely on any heuristic rules. In this process, patterns are grouped together in such a way that their distinctive features can be explored. Such features are then used for identification purposes.

Abstract: While cost saving is at the forefront of the reasons for offshoring to low wage countries, the moves relevant to ICT are also motivated by difficulty in finding the right talents inside the country. One of the root causes for such a difficulty, is related to the drastic fall in the number of students in field like computer engineering and ICT. To combat that, there have been serious changes in national education policies, and the way universities and other training institutions conduct their business to inspire young students to choose ICT for their studies. Although as a consequence of those, in some parts of the world, the number of students enrolling in these fields have stabilized or even increased, given the number of years it takes to educate a graduate, the number of graduates has been dropping at alarming rates. Furthermore, the ICT skills shortages for experienced professionals, in most industrialized countries can be expected to get worse, before they eve!
ntually get better. There is also a strong case for retraining many people who already have tertiary education, whether in the workforce or not, to overcome to ominous ICT skills dilemma. This paper reports on the examination of these problems. It also reports on the advantages of taking a more broad-spectrum view, requiring a combination of many existing solutions along with novel approaches and realistic analysis of the acceptance of the current global ICT services and education environments to overcome these problems.

Abstract: The life of a software system is considered in a probabilistic way in order to develop a quality measure for the system called software reliability. The basic requirement is a specific probability model from statistical science to be modeled for software failure data in order to predict the future failure time of the system. In this paper the software failure pattern is approximated by a generalized half logistic probability distribution by a different approach called type II generalization. The failure process is mathematically evaluated and empirically examined for live software failure data with the theory of mathematical statistics.

Abstract: Computer software has progressively turned out to be an essential component in modern technologies. Penalty costs resulting from software failures are often more considerable than software developing costs. Debugging decreases the error content but expands the software development costs. To improve the software quality, software reliability engineering plays an important role in many aspects throughout the software life cycle. In this paper, we incorporate both imperfect debugging and change-point problem into the software reliability growth model(SRGM) based on the well-known exponential distribution the parameter estimation is studied and the proposed model is compared with the some existing models in the literature and is find to be better.

Abstract: In the context of renewable energy, this study treats the functioning of a hybrid system containing two sources: solar panels and wind turbine. In fact, the conversion of solar energy and of wind energy to electrical one is non pollutant. The studied system is connected to a lead acid battery. The modeling of solar panel and its functioning in charging the used battery is discussed in this paper. Same analysis is applied on the wind turbine connected to the lead acid battery. Then, the functioning of the hybrid system combined with the used battery is treated. Finally, a control strategy of the global system is proposed.

Analytical study of delta modulations with sampling rate adaptation have been carried out few years ago. The described ADM systems encode the input signal by changing the sampling intervals and/or step size according to it’s time-varying slope characteristics. A proposition for design of the parameters of delta modulators with adapting the sampling frequency have been presented. The relation between the boundary values of sampling frequency changes, step size and input power level have been described by the LambertW function. The method presented in this study are useful for parameters design of NS-DM and ANS-DM modulations

Abstract: For much of the past decade Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) systems have gained considerable attention among researchers. Recent improvements in Optics have expanded the applications of HSI systems. Real time processing of extensive volumes of Hyperspectral data calls for more efficient and accurate real time algorithms. In current algorithms, speed comes at the expense of accuracy. Nevertheless, our proposed Ultra Fast Transition and Replacement (UFTR) approach shows a substantial improvement to the processing speed while also increasing the accuracy of the present methods. In the UFTR algorithm, Hyperspectral components' signatures, known as Endmembers, are estimated in an iterative approach. In each iteration, a linear transformation of data into the abundance vectors is calculated. This iterative process causes the speed of the algorithm to be extraordinarily fast. To improve the accuracy, a correlation based approach is used to project the estimated Endmembers int!
o the library spectrum. Accurate abundance vectors are calculated using the final transition matrix and the chosen Endmembers from the library. UFTR simulation results show that in low-SNR applications, the accuracy can be improved up to 15% and the speed is 10 to 50 times faster compared to the existing methods for a data cube of 4096 pixel with 224 bands. Furthermore, unlike many existing approaches, UFTR processing time dependency on the noise level is quite low. UFTR is definitely a departure from the trade-off between speed and accuracy and has a great potential for applications in the real time Hyperspectral imaging.

Abstract: Although a wide range of control algorithms are available, PID controllers are still the most widely used type. Even control engineers who have a good knowledge of advanced control algorithms prefer PID controllers when they are asked to design the control circuit for a new device. This is because of their price and because of the simplicity and reliability of the control algorithm. The PID control algorithm enables anyone with a basic knowledge of mathematics to gain some idea of what happens inside the controller during the control process, how the manipulated value is computed and its dependence on the control error. The main disadvantage of standard PID type controllers is the absence of autotuning features. Implementation of such controllers requires time-consuming tuning, and very often the presence of expensive experts. Therefore, there is quite strong pressure to equip new PID controllers with simple autotuners. Recently, tuners based on relay experiments h!
ave become popular. However, the use of autotuners of this kind requires the control process to be stopped temporarily during the relay experiment. For these reasons, even controllers equipped with these autotuning facilities are used without any tuning, sometimes even with the factory presetting. This unsatisfactory situation has motivated us to develop a new frequency response based autotuning algorithm that does not use any model of the controlled plant and enables the controller parameters to be changed without the necessity to break the control process.

Abstract: Abstract— In this paper fuzzy logic theory was studied and applied to the process control system. The paper presents an intelligent control system design. In order to perform the state prediction necessary to the fuzzy logic controller the system was developed based on input/output data. The investigation was performed by simulation. As a case study a distillation packed column was investigated. The controller has been based on the process inverse dynamic control. An advanced fuzzy control model was derived. The dynamic response has been applied to predict and control the distillate composition and distillate flow rate to feed flow rate and feed composition disturbance. The obtained results show improving products quality control, determine optimum set points, and a troubleshooting day to day operating problem.

Abstract: This paper investigates the feedback stabilization problem of linear time-varying uncertain delay systems using linear memoryless state feedback control. Each uncertain parameter and each delay under consideration may take arbitrarily large values. In such a situation, the locations of uncertain entries in the system matrices play an important role. It has been shown that if a system has a particular configuration called a triangular configuration, then the system is stabilizable irrespectively of the given bounds of uncertain variations. In this paper, so far obtained stabilizability conditions are developed into the ones called a double triangular configuration. The objective of this paper is to show that if a system has such an extended configuration, then the system is also stabilizable independently of both the bounds of uncertain parameters and time delays. An illustrative example is presented to verify the effectiveness of the obtained result.

Abstract: In Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) domain a new methodology is proposed in this paper; this methodology is based on statistical features such as Hu invariant moments (invariant to scale and translation) and a correlation measure (between 2 images). In order to attack image rotation problem, we use principal components analysis. Image comparison is done by correlation. Proposed scheme was tested with hundred of structured images like: electronic circuits, cell phones, cars, trees, leaves, grass, glasses, tables, etc. Features characteristics are extracted from invariant moments, taken from window size estimation. From a query image, a set of features were estimated in order to compare to a set of images. Correlation function is applied to get image similarity, it is obtained a believe percentage value. As a methodology conclusion, we found that the invariant moments combined with principal component analysis gives excellent results in image retrieval task. An !
exhaustive study was performed with 1000 images. We also evaluated the impact of noise on the images testing additive Gaussian random noise.

Abstract: The apparel industry is a prime example for the field of manual manufacture. Problems in manufacturing control are caused by manual handling of garments and influence the availability and correctness of information. This bad information quality leads to problems along the supply chain from production to disposition. Automated data management based on radio frequency identification technology is proposed to solve these problems. Autonomous control can be established on top to increase the system robustness and flexibility and to enable smaller manufacturing batch sizes. Although autonomous control is easily applicable in highly automated systems its application in manual processes is generally difficult. Three different system architectures are discussed, diverse technical approaches are analyzed and decision is made for one approach based on radio frequency identification and manufacturing batches that suits the apparel scenario well.

Abstract: The purpose of a seat suspension system are attempt to isolate vehicle vibration excitations from being transmitted to the drivers and to improve passenger comfort. Traditional seat suspension systems are composed of two parallel components, that is springs and viscous dampers. This paper, presents a 7-DOF vehicle's driver model with seat suspension system. A genetic algorithm is applied to search for the optimal parameters of the seat in order to minimize seat suspension deflection and driver's body acceleration to achieve the best comfort of the driver. The simulation results were compared with the ones of the passive suspensions through step and sinusoidal excitation of the seat suspension system for the currently used suspension systems. The optimum design parameters of the suspension systems obtained are kse=5014.1 N/m and cse=55.5 N.s/m in case of sinusoidal input and kse=42934 N/m and cse=50 N.s/m in case of step input, respectively.

The matter becomes worse when the size of training data set is large, which is common in data mining tasks. Moreover, depending on samples, the performance of neural networks change. Abstract: The 3rd Generation WCDMA standard has been enhanced to offer significantly increased performance for packet data. But coming application such as multimedia on desiring data rates will urge the UMTS support. To support such high data rates, High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) labeled as 3.5G wireless system, has been published in UMTS Release 5. Under the HSDPA system, it will have to support high speed transmission and promises a peak data rate of up to 10Mb/s. To achieve such high speed rate, system provides the information of Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) information to detect the air interface condition. Then, there are many channel condition related scheduling schemes have been proposed to attend achievement of high system performance and guarantee the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. However, there is no solution of packet scheduling algorithm can consider differences of data-types priority management under the hybrid automatic repeat (HARQ) scen!
ario. In this paper, we propose the weight combination packet scheduling algorithm to target to enhance the system efficiency and balance QoS requirements. The proposed schemes is simulated with OPNET simulator and compared with the Max CIR and PF algorithms in fast fading channel. Simulation result shows that the proposed algorithm can both increase the cell throughput effectively and meet user¡¦s satisfaction base on QoS requirements.

Abstract: With global transnational enterprise layout trend, data consistency convergence study is a key of improving competitions and Bullwhip Effect problem in Supply Chain. This paper proposed a specific ODMS dependent replicas correctness maintenance engineering project. A resolution model provides adaptive adjustability update routing policies in hierarchical enterprise database. On the basis of real time updating process framework, several models are built. Different value added update service schema was also analyzed. A comprehensive update of the enterprise data that resident in internal heterogeneity of supply chain knowledge base existed partially dependency relationships with specified ODMS. With this paper on a comprehensive update mechanism of the organization in both dependencies spread copy of the knowledge using flexibility and globally consistence maintenance mechanisms to reach enterprise internal and external data consistency.

Abstract: If we analyze real life filter sets (classifiers) and also packet classification requirements, it seems that distribution of rule scope is non-uniform and in some sub spaces is denser inside the total space of classifiers. These features guided us to add "cut point heuristic" to HiCuts, one of the most efficient algorithms and resulted in two new optimized designs for HiCuts, named B-HiCuts and Hist. Also one of the hardware based and fast solution for classification is use of TCAM memory to implement classifiers, but TCAMs are expensive and are not efficient for range fields. The third approach in this paper introduces a hybrid scheme to do a part of search on prefix fields in TCAM and then to check other fields, the search process will be traversed to RAM section in the second level. Synthetic classifiers are made by ClassBench and used to simulate and evaluate performance of proposed designs. The most specifications of proposed methods are balancing of decision !
trees and reducing the consumed memory for B-HiCuts and Hist and also solving range to prefix conversion and multi match classification problems in the last proposed design.

Abstract: At global level, the industry of tourism represents the most dynamic activity sector, the most important generator of workplaces, and a source of recovery for the national economy. Specialists consider that, in the global perspective, travel and tourism, together with information technology and telecommunications will be the three industries of services with the highest turnover. Abstract: The goal of this article is the application of efficient approximate testing methods for the robot tracking problem as well as for the building map problem . In the Databases field, one wish to classify uncertain data and to answer queries in an approximated way in the case that data sources are incoherent. Our interest is based on the fundamental problems in the randomized approximate testing algorithms. Concerning robot navigation we would like to apply efficient data sketching algorithms for testing the automata inferred on robot motion tracking problems as well as on maps sensorialy generated by robot exploration and building map process. In the case of the information generated by sensors, given that we have no complete access to the information, and given the inherent limitations on memory space, we will apply streaming algorithms for approximate efficiently the solution of computational problems that take place on robot navigation problems.

Abstract: The current paper aims at sketching the manner how both native and foreign visitors perceive, appreciate and, why not, intend to consume the cultural tourism offer of Transylvania, a Romanian region. The article is elaborated on the findings of an Internet based research study that was carried out at the beginning of this year, findings that are correlated to the ones obtained in two previous personal researches. Cluj and Sibiu, two Romanian counties belonging to Transylvania, represent the focus points of our paper. Why were they chosen? Abstract: A critical issue in financial markets' research is the debate between the academic orthodox approach of the Efficient Markets' Hypothesis and the critics rising from the behavioral finance paradigm and practice. Several alternative explanations have been proposed in order to provide a more realistic description of the financial markets' inner mechanisms. This debate's importance consists in the implications of the adopted point of view on the assessment of the financial markets' predictability degree. [4], [5] proposed a unified approach labeled as Adaptive Markets Hypothesis. Thus, from a practical point of view, the main issue consists in providing a pertinent answer to the next question: Is an active portfolio management able to provide better results that a passive "follow the market on long-run" strategy? If in adaptive models the markets are considered to display, at least in a certain sense, a degree of predictability, then, one of the major difficulties in !
supplying empirical evidences is the requirement of knowing ex ante the "exact" forecast model used by the economic subjects. The aim of this study is providing a solution to this problem inspired by the transduction's (supervised learning) algorithms. Our main output consists in the thesis that the forecasting errors matter for price formation in financial markets. So, despite the fact that nor the theoretical foundations nor the empirical evidences are conclusive, we argue that the nature of the "exact" learning mechanisms can be seen as one of the key variables in investors' decisions and markets evolution. There is a significant positive payoff of a more detailed study of such mechanisms inside an extended framework of financial markets as complex systems.

Abstract: In this study, the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) analysis technique is applied to the Local Environmental Quality (LEQ) management strategy for the community.The results show that the factors of resource recycling and utilization are the most important influences on the LEQ management strategy of the community. The global weight of the spare resource and utilize is 0.1664, and it is the most important factor in the sub-factor of the steps. In a community sustainable management strategy assessment, the global weights of the spare resource and utilization, impetus the community zero waste, the community installation, and space activation, in pollution prevention of the community, and recycling, reusing, and the installation of polluting factories are the important sub-factors in the LEQ assessment, and would affect the sustainable management strategy assessments, the analysis of the global weights are at 0.17~0.09. Abstract: The manner is illustrated in which energy conversion processes during electric train operation can be analyzed using exergy. Loss of exergy reflects a loss of potential of energy to do work. Following the notion that life on Earth demonstrates sustainable energy conversion, we assess the viability of transportation systems according to the model of an ecosystem. Analysis steps based on an industrial ecosystem metabolism include describing the electric railway system as an industrial ecosystem with its limits and components, defining system operation regimes, and assessing the equilibrium points of the system for two reference frames. Exergy losses can be related to the energy flows during dynamic processes, and exergy conversion in these processes provides a meaningful measure of the industrial ecosystem efficiency. The results are expected to help make transportation systems more sustainable. Potentially beneficial directions for future research are highlighted.

Abstract: GSM/(E)GPRS networks support a mixture of traffic consisting of voice and data. A key concept of dimensioning radio resources in such networks is represented by sharing resources between different users and different services. In this paper we address the problem of voice and data traffic models according to different resources allocations strategies: CP (Complete Partitioning) and PP( Partial Partitioning) and define specific parameters in each case. The proposed traffic model depend in each case on the resources allocation strategy: for voice traffic it is based on both cases, CP and PP, on Erlang law meanwhile for data traffic we build different models depending the scheme used for resources allocation. For CP scheme we propose two models: the model based on Erlang law and those based on modified Engset law. For PP scheme we also proposed two models: one is based on the bi-dimensional Markov chain and the other on the modified Engset law. Both consider voice-!
data interaction according to the PP scheme. In all cases we define specific performance parameters. We also implement the studied models and evaluate the proposed performance parameters. Finally we compare the results in order to find the adequate model to use for dimensioning purposes.

Abstract: Many works have studied traffic modeling in GSM/GPRS networks trying to establish different performance parameters needed for dimensioning purposes. An important element of these networks is the radio resources. Sharing resources between different users and different services is a key concept of radio resources dimensioning in GSM/GPRS networks. In this paper we focus on the problem of performance evaluation in GSM/GPRS networks. We consider different resources allocation strategies such as: CP (Complete Partitioning) and PP (Partial Partitioning) and we study the influence of different operational details concerning TS (time-slots) assignment: FR (full rate), HR (half rate) and packing. Finally, we establish dimensioning rules based on traffic evaluation and quality of service level for GSM/GPRS users. For voice users the quality of service is given by the blocking probability calculated according to the proposed packing rule and for GPRS users the individual thro!
ughput and the blocking probability represent the performance parameters. We consider also the preemption probability of voice over data users.

Abstract: The renovation of teaching and learning methodologies, promoted by the onset of the Bologna Declaration, is leading to shifting perceptions of roles and responsibilities of both teachers and students. Particularly in large engineering classes, certain subjects benefit from more active approaches to learning, namely those associated with team work and tutorial practices, rather than traditional lecture/teacher-driven presentations. Project-led education (PLE) and Project/problem-based learning (PBL) are successful student-centred teaching strategies by directing team work towards independent learning. These new approaches transfer the teacher's role from a mere transmitter of knowledge to that of advisor and facilitator of the learning process, by providing guidance and suggestions designed to encourage students to find their own solutions for proposed problems. This paper describes a methodology for promoting and encouraging independent team work using tutorial tec!
hniques for the practical sessions of the Environmental Impact Assessment course (mandatory and elective) included in the Civil Engineering programme at the University of Minho. The authors were faced with a multi-faceted problem: managing and motivating a large class of civil engineering students in a transdisciplinary and non-traditional civil engineering setting. So, they decided to implement a project-based strategy aiming to foster the development and enhancement of student ´skills and aptitudes. The learning objectives were well-defined, as well as a set of pre-scheduled tutorial meetings for team work monitoring and assessment. The overall project goal was to conduct a critical analysis of one or more cases concerning environmental impact assessment, in view of the concepts apprehended in lecture and through literature review of pertinent documents and applicable regulations. The students were pleased with the requirement to use and critically analyse procedural docu!
ments and regulations, favouring a broader understanding of the subjec
t. The opportunity to study and analyse real cases was referred as a particularly positive aspect of this methodology, which allowed for another learning dimension towards the development of professional competencies. At the end of the semester and upon submitting the final written report, each student was required to conduct a simple exercise of self and peer-assessment. The results of the Teaching/Learning Evaluation institutional survey were used to determine how successful the implementation of the new EIA course design had been, and, overall, both instructors and students considered the implemented methodology to be positive and suitable. The ability to conduct independent work and the freedom to manage their own work schedules were particularly appreciated, especially by students with heavier workloads from other courses. The experience described represents a significant move towards innovative approaches for handling and motivating large engineering classes in a trans!
disciplinary context, by encouraging active and collaborative learning activities, and by leading with real-world problems.

Abstract: Localization or positioning is an important aspect of mobile applications in order to achieve context-aware applications. The main goal for localization process is estimating the position of a mobile device in its environment based on a set of sensors with known positions. Modern mobile devices produced nowadays, and almost all smartphones and PDAs, have one or more wireless communication interfaces in order to communicate with other devices. WLAN infrastructure is a widely accepted and implemented communication standard in many indoor environment, therefore many buildings are already equipped with IEEE 802.11 WLAN infrastructure access points. Wireless adapters the modern mobile devices are equipped with can monitor radio power strength of the emitting sources nearby. Based on the received radio signal strength an estimation of distance between the device and power source can be computed. In this paper we want to describe and conclude our work regarding the possib!
ility to design a simple and energy efficient positioning solution to be implemented on mobile devices with limited resources.

Abstract: Nowadays, we have to deal with a large quantity of unstructured data, produced by a number of sources. For example, clustering web pages is essential to getting structured information in response to user queries. In this paper, we intend to test the results of a new clustering technique – clustering by compression – when applied to heterogeneous sets of data. The clustering by compression procedure is based on a parameter-free, universal, similarity distance, the normalized compression distance or NCD, computed from the lengths of compressed data files (singly and in pair-wise concatenation). Compression algorithms allow defining a similarity measure based on the degree of common information, whereas clustering methods allow clustering similar data without any previous knowledge.
