Abstract: Chronic exposure to altitude triggers special adaptive mechanisms which were defined using several terms: acclimatization, which refers to the process of adjusting to different environmental factors (temperature, radiations, atmospheric pressure, aeroions, magnetic field etc.), acclimation which refers to the process of adjusting to one single factor and adaptation which refers to the genetic modifications caused by the environmental factors, transmitted from generation to generation through natural selection. Research is done on volunteers subjected to a standard effort at the sea level and then at the altitude of 1700 m, for 10 days according to a training schedule. The results are in agreement with the data from the specialized literature about the positive effects of altitude training upon the aerobic and anaerobic effort capacity under normobarism. The trials were specific to the type of sport practiced – alpine skiing, a mainly anaerobic sport.
