Abstract: Main objective of the research work is to study various leakage preventive methods used in gas turbine and to suggest an appropriate method for laboratory type gas turbine. Seal research and development is typically directed towards reducing leakage. Different types of seals used in turbomachinery are studied for their working principles, main components and material. These seals are compared for temperature, pressure and speed limits. Advantages, disadvantages and applications are also given. Labyrinth seal is selected as a best choice for laboratory type gas turbine because of its simplicity, low cost, no lubrication requirement and high life. Shape optimization of straight and stepped labyrinth seals is given for laboratory type turbine and compressor. Objective of the optimization was to obtain seal geometry with minimum leakage. Optimized ratios for straight through labyrinth seal are knife tip thickness to clearance ratio 1/3.5, knife taper angle 10º, knife h!
eight to clearance ratio 11 and knife height to pitch ratio unity. Optimized ratios for stepped labyrinth seal are stepped distance to knife pitch ratio .85 and stepped height to clearance ratio 5. Labyrinth seal pressure capability is 5 psi per knife teeth. Maximum pressure difference in given operating conditions was 14.7 psi. This pressure difference required 3 teeth. For factor of safety 4 teeth are taken as appropriate solution. Stainless steel is selected for seal material due to its availability and manufacturing ease. Recommended clearance for stainless steel labyrinth seal is .026 in. For this clearance calculated parameters for straight through labyrinth seal are pitch and teeth height .29 in and knife tip thickness .01 in. Calculated parameters for stepped labyrinth seal are pitch .61 in, teeth height .29 in, knife tip thickness .03 in, step distance .51 in and step height .13 in.
