TITLE: Service Learning as a Method of University Impact on Public Knowledge. Case Study of University Students Contributions to Wikipedia

KEYWORDS: Service Learning, Service Science, Public Knowledge, University, Wikipedia

ABSTRACT: Modern universities have four basic tasks that have to offer to students: studying, training, research and active citizenship. Since it is already known that Service Learning (SL) method fulfills two tasks - training and active citizenship, the goal of this paper is to discuss if SL method fulfills other two tasks of modern universities studying and research?
In order to obtain the answer to this question we surveyed the students who were given the assignment to write and put an article on Wikipedia. Students' answers indicate that SL method fulfills all four tasks of modern universities: studying, training, research and active citizenship. At the same time, the choice of the project, more precisely the writing of an article for Wikipedia, realizes the impact of service learning method on public knowledge.

TITLE: Parameter Estimation of Transfer Function of Pilot Behavior Model from Measured Data

KEYWORDS: MATLAB®, System Identification Toolbox™, Pilot Behavior Model, Pilot Model, Data Identification, X-Plane Software, Flight Simulator, Pilot Response, Identification Algorithm

ABSTRACT: This paper describes calculations and results of time constants of mathematical model of a pilot's behavior. Pilot was tested to a sudden altitude change whilst he controlled an aircraft. For calculations were used two different methods of measured data processing. Firstly the method using System Identification Toolbox™ from programming environment MATLAB® was applied. The second method used the identification algorithm to identify parameters of a transfer function of dynamic system which has been created by authors few years ago. The analytical model of human behavior from the basic element of an automated regulation was created. Experimental measurements were made on the Cessna 152 cockpit simulator at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield. The tested pilots were pilot students with several tens of flight hours in real planes. The pilot's response to a sudden aircraft altitude change was measured. The achieved results will be analyzed at other stages of research activity in order to reach maximum plausibility of human behavior model.

TITLE: Corporate brand identity management in a technological faculty – how brand relationships influence students and companies´ reputations?

KEYWORDS: relationships, corporate brand, identity, management, reputations, higher education

ABSTRACT: The literature recognizes the influence of relationships between companies in identity management. Yet, given the increasingly important role of corporate brands, it is surprising that to date no attempt to evaluate that influence has been made in corporate brand´s identity management. Authors argue that corporate brand´s identity can be developed under a relational perspective using relationships with other recognized brands in order to generate positive reputations in stakeholders. A framework is developed to identify how corporate brands select, develop and invest in relationships with other brands. An empirical qualitative research is designed using a technological higher education institution acting in Portuguese public market. This study is an internal perspective of lecturers/researchers and brand managers. Data is analyzed using qualitative analysis (supported by NVivo9). Results are very encouraging to identity research and to brand management.

TITLE: New Perspectives in Road Traffic Noise Prediction

KEYWORDS: Noise Control, Road Traffic Noise, Traffic Theory, Dynamical Models.

ABSTRACT: Road vehicular traffic is one of the most important noise sources in urban environment, together with railways and industries. The annoyance produced by exposure to road traffic noise has been deeply investigated in scientific literature, resulting to affect mental and physical health in terms of sleep and/or conversation disturbance, hearing loss, cardiovascular problems, anxiety and stress, etc.. Thus, the need for modelling of acoustical noise produced by road vehicular traffic is a significant issue nowadays. Usually Traffic Noise predictive Models (TNMs) are adopted to monitor the equivalent noise level at the receivers and to define risk classes for each area, according to the purpose of the activities therein. If possible, experimental measurements are performed, in order to tune models parameters and to verify noise predictions. These models are generally based on a statistical approach and give an evaluation of the equivalent noise level in a certain point, with a given flow of vehicles. The shortcomings of these models are highlighted and discussed on a review process and experimental data comparison basis. Different theoretical approaches can be adopted in the modelling of the source and in the description of the propagation, resulting in interesting elements to be considered in the model build up. The integration with dynamical traffic theory represents the new frontier of road traffic noise prediction.

TITLE: The most simple force formula for coaxial cylindrical magnets and thin coils

KEYWORDS: Coaxial cylindrical magnets, magnetic force, thin wall solenoids.

ABSTRACT: In this paper we give the general formula most simplified for calculating the magnetic force for coaxial cylindrical magnets and thin coils. All possible singular cases are automatically handled by the proposed formula. The results of the presented work have been verified by the filament method and previously published data. The new formula provide a substantially simple alternative over previously published approaches, which involve either numerical techniques (FEM, BEM, MOM) or other semi-analytic or analytic approaches.

TITLE: The equity markets and the flows generated by currency carry trades

KEYWORDS: markets, currency pairs, carry trades, correlation, regression analysis

ABSTRACT: Carry trade strategies based on major currency pairs gained momentum between 1995 and 2008, a period when financing for investments on the capital markets was difficult in developed countries that held high key interest rates. Japan was the first economic power that lowered the interest rate below 1% in 1995 and generated an important circuit on the USDJPY exchange rate. We plan to empirically test the influence of the largest currency carry trade channel, the USDJPY, on the US equity market and to highlight the importance of major carry trade circuits for anticipating movements in equity markets.

ABSTRACT: The impact of new technologies, especially ICT, education is not bypassed. Multimedia has a special role and its positive impact in the process of learning and teaching is not questionable. Today it is common to use multimedia learning materials in education. Unfortunately, many of them are questionable quality. In research conducted at the Polytechnic in Rijeka quality of multimedia learning materials is evaluated through several parameters of which one is the presentation design. The study confirmed the assumption about the relationship and impact indicators, presentation design and levels of knowledge, although in lesser extent than expected. The research results represent a stimulus for further research to improve the presentation design of multimedia learning materials to maximize the acquired knowledge after the use of such materials.

TITLE: Level Quantization Effects in Digital Signal Processing
by Discrete Fourier Transform Method

KEYWORDS: Signal Processing, Spectral analysis, Fourier transform, Numerical modeling, Quantization operator, Digital processing.

ABSTRACT: The paper is aimed at drawing the attention of developers of measuring and computing devices based on modern microelectronic elements to a crucial problem of digital signal processing- quantization of the signal levels. Study of the quantization effects and of distortions caused by those effects is carried out for spectral analysis based on discrete Fourier transform. The overflow effect (signal cutting per level due to shortage of the quantization device bits) is also considered. A formula is derived for transforming a real number to its nearest quantization level. Numerical modeling tests are performed on level-quantized digital realizations of harmonic oscillations (pure ones And mixed with noise) to construct characteristics-dependencies between program-assigned signal parameters and those measured in the course of digital processing under various signal quantization and cutting conditions.

TITLE: A New Proposal to Insert Watermark into Audio Files Using the Hermite Transform

KEYWORDS: Audio, Hermite transform, imperceptible, recovered watermarking, watermarking.

ABSTRACT: In this work we present a new watermarking technique to audio files using the Hermite transform (HT). The main feature of this technique is that watermark can be recovered after it has been embedded and is not required the original file, such that it has a blind recovery technique. The use of HT with audio files is to determinate your performance with them, because the Hermite transform background is with digital images. However according to the results, we obtain an efficiently method to watermark audio files, achieving that the watermark is imperceptible to the human ear. In addition the results of metrics calculation, correlation and peak signal to noise ratio strengthen the effectiveness of the method. The file that is used as watermark is also an audio file, and the amount of information of the audio file is used as a watermark is half the length of the host audio.

TITLE: Evaluation of Visegrad Countries Efficiency in Comparison with Austria and Germany by Selected Data Envelopment Analysis Models

KEYWORDS: Austria, competitiveness, DEA method, efficiency, Germany, inefficiency, model BCC/CCR/SBM, Visegrad Four

ABSTRACT: The paper deals with an application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method to multi-criteria efficiency evaluation of the Visegrad Four countries (V4) in comparison with selected advanced European Union (EU) countries – Austria and Germany. The aim of the paper is to analyse a degree of efficiency achieved in individual countries which is perceived as a reflection of the level of competitive potential in the reference period 2000 – 2010. The theoretical part of the paper is devoted to the fundamental bases of competitiveness and the methodology of DEA method. The empirical part is aimed at measuring the efficiency of evaluated countries by selected DEA models – basic CCR and BCC models and additive SBM models. When applying DEA method, we used indicators, which are part of the Country Competitiveness Index (CCI) – common approach of European Union (EU) and World Economic Forum (WEF) to competitiveness evaluation. The final part of the paper offers a comprehensive comparison of results obtained by using of all calculated DEA models.
