Abstract: The Power Generation, Power transmission & Distribution attract equal investments. The utilities have started investing increasingly in various Distribution Automation tools for both cost reduction & service benefits. One major tool available for Power Utilities is the Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition ( SCADA ) System that enables to remotely monitor, coordinate, control & operate distribution components, equipment & devices in a Real time mode from remote locations with acquisition of data for analysis & planning from one central location. Distribution Automation through SCADA Systems directly leads to increased Reliability of power for the consumers. Reliability of a SCADA System is the probability that the system uninterruptedly perform specified functions accurately during the stated interval of time on a condition that the system is used in a specified environment. If one failure in 5years for a SCADA System is affordable then the failure rate would tra!
nslate to 2.28*10 -5 failures per hour. The Markov model system failure rate is based on Product series of the individual components and the system. The Reliability of the series system turns out to be lower than the weakest component. This paper first discusses the component reliability and the reliability of interconnected systems for the components of SCADA processor, front end processor, Ethernet, Router, Gate, Operator workstation, Fiber optic data link, Software & communication interfaces to RTU etc. The component selection is important for two reasons. Firstly, the system performance or the system response time is related to the performance of the components in the sense that system response times may be reduced by the use of components, which have shorter service times. Secondly, the system reliability is related to the reliabilities of the components of the system. Therefore, if one component has a longer mean time between failures than a second component then it i!
s more reliable than the second component. Hence, the components must
be selected not only to give acceptable system response times for a specified volume of messages but also to give acceptable system reliability. Also this paper gives insight how to increase the reliability & avoid redundancy.
