Abstract: Use Case approach has been one of the popular ways to identify classes and objects in the problem domain for Object-Oriented Analysis (OOA). But critical reviews in the recent past have shown some problems and limitations with Use Cases. This paper describes an Event – based process to identify classes and objects in the problem domain for Object-Oriented Analysis (OOA). Unlike Use Case approach, it captures requirements in terms of Events. E-XTRACT is a tool developed in JAVA, for assisting analysts in identifying, extracting and classifying events from requirements. Events extracted are documented in Event Templates. An Event Meta-Model is proposed that gives basis for defining structural contents of an Event Template. Comparison is also drawn between Event Template and conventional Use Case Template. This paper then introduces mapping rules to generate Class Diagram specification from Event Templates. Finally, it illustrates application of the whole process on a!
Case study. Results have shown that Events can generate a richer and more detailed static model (i.e. a class diagram) from the requirement specifications.
