NEW YORK, February 4, 2008 - ACM, the Association for Computing
Machinery, has named Edmund M. Clarke, E. Allen Emerson, and Joseph
Sifakis the winners of the 2007 A.M. Turing Award, widely considered
the most prestigious award in computing, for their original and
continuing research in a quality assurance process known as Model
Checking. Their innovations transformed this approach from a
theoretical technique to a highly effective verification technology
that enables computer hardware and software engineers to find errors
efficiently in complex system designs. This transformation has
resulted in increased assurance that the systems perform as intended
by the designers. The Turing Award, named for British mathematician
Alan M. Turing, carries a $250,000 prize, with financial support
provided by Intel Corporation and Google Inc. Clarke of Carnegie
Mellon University, and Emerson of the University of Texas at Austin,
working together, and Sifakis, working independently for the Centre
National de la Recherche Scientifique at the University of Grenoble in
France, developed this fully automated approach that is now the most
widely used verification method in the hardware and software
industries.

ACM President Stuart Feldman said the work of Clarke, Emerson and
Sifakis has had a major impact on designers and manufacturers of
semiconductor chips. "These industries face a technology explosion in
which products of unprecedented complexity have to operate as expected
for companies to survive. This verification advance enabled these
industries to shorten time to market and increase product integrity.
Without the conceptual breakthrough pioneered by these researchers, we
might still be stuck with chips that have many errors and would lack
the power and speed of today's equipment. This is a great example of
an industry-transforming technology arising from highly theoretical
research," Feldman said.

Model Checking as a standard procedure for quality assurance has
enabled designers and manufacturers to address verification problems
that span both hardware and software. It has also helped them to gain
mathematical confidence that complex computer systems meet their
specifications, and it has provided added security for a range of both
common and critical computing applications.

"Intel and the entire computing industry have been direct
beneficiaries of the awardees' ground-breaking work," said Andrew
Chien, Vice President in the Corporate Technology Group and Director
of Research of Intel Corporation. "Our researchers and engineers have
worked closely with Clarke, Emerson, and Sifakis for 15 years.
Insights from their novel automatic verification results have been
widely adopted by the entire industry. These Model Checking approaches
provide dramatically better coverage when searching for design
errors."

"Google, like any contemporary technology company, owes a great deal
of its success to the work of pioneering researchers who have come
before," said Alan Eustace, Senior Vice President of Engineering at
Google. "We are proud to honor the award winners for their innovative
solution to a difficult and pervasive issue and we hope this will
encourage and inspire those who now face the technology challenges of
the future."

Migrating from Pure Research to Industrial Reality
Logical errors in digital circuit designs, software, and communication
protocols are an important problem for system designers. They often
result in delays in getting new products to market, failures of
critical systems already in use, and expensive replacement of faulty
hardware and patching of flawed software.

Model Checking started as an academic research idea. The continuing
research of Clarke, Emerson, and Sifakis as well as others in the
international research community over the last 27 years led to the
creation of new logics, as well as new algorithms and surprising
theoretical results. This in turn has stimulated the creation of many
Model Checking tools by both academic and industrial teams, resulting
in the widespread industrial use of Model Checking.

Many major hardware and software companies now rely heavily on Model
Checking. Common examples include verification of the designs for
integrated circuits such as microprocessors, as well as communication
protocols, software device drivers, real-time embedded systems, and
security algorithms.

Among the beneficiaries of Model Checking are personal computer users,
medical device makers, and nuclear power plant operators. As
computerized systems pervade daily life, consumers rely on digital
controllers to supervise critical functions of cars, airplanes, and
industrial plants. Digital switching technology has replaced analog
components in the telecommunications industry, and security protocols
enable e-commerce applications and privacy. Wherever significant
investments or human lives are at risk, quality assurance for the
underlying hardware and software components becomes paramount.

Background
In 1981, Edmund Clarke and Allen Emerson working in the U.S., and
Joseph Sifakis working independently in France with J.P. Queille,
authored seminal papers that founded what has become the highly
successful field of Model Checking. This verification technology
offers two advantages. It provides an algorithmic means of determining
whether an abstract model, such as a hardware or software design,
satisfies a formal specification, such as a temporal logic formula
(i.e., a pattern for a sequence of events). In addition, it identifies
the counter-examples that show the source of the problem, which must
be addressed should the stated property specification not hold.

A drawback of the Model Checking approach, known as the state-
explosion problem, seemed to limit its applicability to small designs
of mainly academic interest. Randal Bryant, Edmund Clarke, Allen
Emerson and Kenneth McMillan invented Symbolic Model Checking, which
greatly extended the size and complexity of systems that could be
verified. It also led to the widespread adoption of Model Checking by
the computer hardware industry. For this invention, Bryant, Clarke,
Emerson, and McMillan received the 1998 Paris Kanellakis Award for
Theory and Practice from ACM. In 1999, they also received the Allen
Newell Award for Research Excellence from Carnegie Mellon University.
Sifakis, together with Thomas A. Henzinger and Sergio Yovine, extended
the Model Checking approach to address verification of real time
systems. In 2001, Sifakis received the Centre National de la Recherche
Scientifique Silver Medal.

Dear Prof. Mastorakis

Tonight I have not slept, hence, possibly I may be absent
minded. I present the decisions and explanations about Istanbul
manuscripts. After this e-mail, I am going to send manuscripts
PDF files. Last evening I urged all referees by phone and I re-
ceived their opinions. As I said on the phone, zimedecisions
were sent to me and now it is complete. I also get together
Review Committee members (I, Baki, Alper and three more
scientists. After that I prepared the following lines.

There were 33 submitted manuscripts (selected after the
conference out of 200 papers from the WSEAS Conference in Istanbul),
only 6 of them have been accepted. You can see the recent status in
the following lines. They are marked by stars.

I will send PDF files of the manuscripts in separate mails
becuase of their sizes.

This afternoon or evening I will write more e-mail. Please
do inform me if you need something to be done by me.

Also thank you all for your excellent organization of the conferences
in Arcachon. Even I could participate only one day, was enough to me
to remark the good quality of the event.
Because of my short stay in Arcachon I was not able to respond
directly to the received questions. I am interested in
distributing WSEAS brochures in my faculty and to establish a local
WSEAS chapter. This matches very well with my activity as Scientific
Secretary (coordination of scientific research, conference organizing
and so on). The Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Iasi has an
academic staff of about 100 persons. Former departments of the faculty
are now separate faculties: Faculty of Electronics and
Telecommunications, Faculty of Automation and Computers. But we can
build together the local WSEAS Chapter.
Maybe in the future we will be able to organize here in Iasi some
WSEAS conferences. The location is not so exotic like Arcachon,
Tenerife or Corfu, but could be an interesting alternative. My
thoughts fly to 2010 when my faculty will celebrate its 100 years of
existence.
I sow a tendency in the last years: there are a lot of conferences and
it is so difficult to attend them all, so some of them are organized
sometimes together in so called joint conferences. It is possible that
WSEAS to do something similar in the future?

had
pleasure to attend the 11th WSEAS CSCC Conference in Agios Nikolaos
Crete,
Greece. I can confirm that every year, the conference becomes better
and better.
Now this major WSEAS conference, has a very good reputation and it
becomes
traditional.

I can say only, that everything (key lectures, plenary lectures,
scientific and
social program) was perfect. I would like to encourage you and your
team to
continue the efforts in this direction.

I wish you all the best and hope to hear from you soon.

I have for the first time paricipated in a WSEAS Conference and I have
been positively impressed.
Both Christine, my co-author, and me we have enjoyed very much the
nice Conference in a so nice place of the Aghios Nikolaos suburbs. We
met interesting people and made new friends and possibly new
collaborators.
I gave both the common lecture of the Wednesday and the plenary
lecture of the next mrning. Since I had much time ,
I have spoken also on another subject of our reasearch activities in
my lab, namely on "Dissertification and Global Warming".
I am interested to present this paper in an uppcomong Conference. I
see there is one in Tenerife of Spain in the coming December, if you
are interested.
I have also been impressed of your personality and the lyra playing of
"Steiakes Kondylies".

I want to thank you again for inviting me to present a plenary lecture
at the European Computing Conference. Also, I was very glad to have
chance meeting you. If I can help WSEAS, e.g. as a reviewer or as a
contact in the southeastern United States, please let me know. I
would
love to get further involved in the programs of WSEAS. Perhaps, one
year we can have a conference on Algebra and its applications in
Greece.

I made some interesting contacts during the meeting, and hope that
some
research opportunities will arise from this. Moreover, I met Dr.
Nicholas Harkiolakis from the Hellenic-American University, where I
will
give a talk in December.

Finally, I want to express my appreciation to the organizing team of
the
conference. I have organized a few conferences (at a smaller scale
though), and know the amount of work that goes into the organization.
It was one of the best organized conferences I have attended. I
especially want to praise the three young people who were in charge of
the front desk. They were extremely friendly, helpful and efficient.
Without doubt, you have the best conference team I have experienced at
any meeting.

Dallas,
which I will also be attending. If you are not too busy it
would be great to also see you at the conference in Portoroz,
and I would have the chance to show you around our beautiful country.

Regarding the conference in Portoroz (Energy and Environment)
I would like to know whether it would be possible for me and
my daughter to hold a short opening lecture regarding the topic
of the conference. My daughter Tina has recently completed her
Master's in European Law, Energy Market in the EU being one of
her subjects, at UCL in London. I am convinced the lecture would be of
good quality.

Also I was wondering whether it would be important for you
for us to invite Slovenian Minister of Economy to the
opening of the conference in Portoroz. That is, of course,
if he accepts the invitation.

Best regards,

Jurij

It is very nice to hear from you and that our WSEAS Journals will be
included in the ISI Thomson soon.

I have an idea concerning having an article published in WSEAS
Journals:

A good example is what the IEICE of Japan has been doing that at least
one
of the authors must be its member. Of course, WSEAS will gain more
members, and provide
excellent services to its members concerning publication. An
accelerated
process can also be offered on the basis of publication fees are
granted. Some Int. Prof.
Societies are requesting the fees as high as 800 euros. Their journals
are indexed by ISI
and evalutated JIF on a regular basis.

Thanks for your time to read this.

Best wishes,

Dear Bernardo,
As you can see from enclosed message, the deadline for the Conference
in Acapulco is extended.
We would appreciate very much if you could inform your colleagues
about it in Mexico.
I will do the same in USA and Ukraine. The matter is that this year
catasrtophic big fires were in GREECE, Ukraine, USA ... which
probably are as result of global warming and CO2 emission.
We are going to discuss at the Conference the possibility of use IQ
technologies which prevent CO2 emission and are
environment friendly. During the last Conference in Athens we
discussed this issue with Prof. Bardis and we
decided to do our best in developing clean technologies and
controlling CO2 emission.
Hope for fruitful cooperation.

Congratulations for the wonderful and excellent WSEAS Conferences
Tomorrow morning I go in Sofia and latter in Skopje for that EU
project about IT.
I really regret we couldnot meet in Athens in september to have some
data for Greece.
I will present just the survey from Romania in this meeting. Ifr the
parteners decide to apply for an FP 7 and is possible to involve you I
will tell.
I won a contract for 1 year abroad in an FP6 program. It will start in
the end of Januaryy.
Hope from there to have more time for research and less bureaucracy.
Greetings from Romania

Lecturer Dr. Camelia Ioana Ucenic

Congratulations again for the high level of the WSEAS Conferences.

I hope that we will see in Athens in August. I will be sure about
this, after I will receive the acceptance of the paper uploaded with
the number 565-271, Study of a Loaded Continuous Beam With the
Yielding Supports.
Because the deadline for submitting the papers for the conference in
Athens has been prolonged until 31 May, the dean of my faculty,
Professor Udriste, and the chief of my department, professor V.
Prepelita, will have more time to prepare their works. Their intention
is to participate to the conference from August, too.
Anyhow, professor Udriste would like to take part to the European
Computing Conference in September.
I thank you very much for the help and wish you a nice week,
