Abstract: Traditional stepped frequency chirp pulse train methods suffer from high sidelobes and ambiguous peaks, known as grating lobes and difficulty in compensating Doppler effect caused by target motion. This paper investigates a class of non-linear stepped frequency chirp pulse train with low sidelobes and capability to cancel clutter and to compensate motion. We present analytic expression for its autocorrelation function (ACF) and propose an improved method to produce the non-linear stepped frequency chirp pulse train with small grating lobes and small overlap ratio for sub-pulse of large time bandwidth product. A method for estimation a target¡¯s radial velocity is developed, which avoids multiple bursts required by other methods. The high signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio as a result of sub-pulse compression assures the accuracy of estimation. The Cramer-Rao bound for lower limit on the velocity estimation of the pulse train is derived to demonstrate its performance.

Abstract: Because of the pressure of globalization in the last two decades, professional services has become an important strategic decision so that supplier selection is a prime concern. In the semiconductor industry, the prior researches worked on analyzing and improving the process, and evaluating the equipment manufacturers. Therefore, being the semiconductor industry applying a wide huge of advanced technologies, wafer suppliers and foundry and DRAM manufacturers acquire a large volume of critical materials and components. Consequently, this study is to identify critical factors related to the wafer supplier selection. It also has become a new subject by how to prompt current position of semiconductor industry and their wafer supplier in Taiwan. Primary criteria to evaluate supplier selection is acquired by the literatures survey, wafer manufacturers¡¦ data and applying fuzzy Delphi method (FDM), and then fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) is employed to calculate !
the weights of these criteria, so as to establish the fuzzy multi-criteria model of wafer supplier selection. The results indicated a greatest weight on the dimension of wafer supplier selection, and seven critical criteria related to wafer supplier selection were: (1) wafer quality, (2) delivery time, (3) service, (4) price, (5) process capability, (6) reputation, and (7) past performance.

Abstract: Mixed and Mixed Hybrid Finite Elements (MHFE) methods have been widely used in the last decade for simulation of groundwater flow problem, petroleum reservoir problems, potential flow problems, etc. The main advantage of these methods is that, unlike the classical Galerkin approach, they guarantee local and global mass balance, as well the flux continuity between inter-element sides. The simple shape of the control volume, where the mass conservation is satisfied, makes also easier to couple this technique with a Finite Volume technique in the time splitting approach for the solution of advection-dispersion problems. In the present paper, a new MHFE formulation is proposed for the solution of the 2D linear groundwater flow problem over domain discretized by means of triangular irregular meshes. The numerical results of the modified MHFE procedure are compared with the results of a modified 2nd spatial approximation order Finite Volume (FV2) formulation [2], as well!
as with the results given by the standard MHFE method. The FV2 approach is equivalent to the standard MHFE approach in the case of isotropic medium and regular or mildly irregular mesh, but has a smaller number of unknowns and better matrix properties. In the case of irregular mesh, an approximation is proposed to maintain the superior matrix properties of the FV2 approach, with the consequent introduction of a small error in the computed solution. The modified MHFE formulation is equivalent to the standard MHFE approach in both isotropic and heterogeneous medium cases, using regular or irregular computational meshes, but has a smaller number of unknowns for given mesh geometry.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of social intelligence and leadership style in partly and truly global projects. In the present study we explored what leadership style is preferred in virtual projects. Further, the study examined the differential effects of level of virtuality on social intelligence and leadership style. We tested our hypotheses with data collected from project management professional working in five countries. We used linear regression and t-test to analyze the proposed hypotheses. Results showed that social awareness and relationship management were positively related to concern for task and concern for people and was higher in truly global than partly global projects. However, we found no effect of virtuality on leadership. The findings of this study have significant implications for leadership skills and behaviors at project management workplace.

Abstract: Parasuraman, Zeithaml and Berry introduced ¡§A Service Quality Model.¡¨ and further explored the gap between expected quality customers having before receiving the service and perceived quality customers regarding after receiving the service (they call this gap as the perceived service quality gap). In their methodology, customers are asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding both expected and perceived service after they received the service. Since both expected and perceived service quality are rated in one single questionnaire, it is questionable that the results obtained can effectively convey the differences of the gap as originally defined. This research proposed a Service Quality Diagnosis Model to re-explore the perceived service quality gap. A traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinic in Taiwan is used as an example to demonstrate the proposed approach. The first stage of the proposed approach involved developing a suitable scale containing the key servi!
ce factors to measure the service quality of TCM clinics. The second phase of the proposed approach explored the service quality of the case TCM clinic by analyzing the results obtained from questionnaire filled out by its patients. Different from any exist approach, respondents need to fill out two questionnaires separately before and after they receive services. The proposed research successfully divided perceived service quality into three types: ideal quality, unacceptable quality and satisfactory quality. As with enterprise diagnosis, the research results can effectively help managers to identify abnormalities in current service quality and further to recommend in-time solutions to the problems or countermeasures for continuous improvement.

Abstract: In this paper, we develop a lung area extraction technique from X-ray computed tomography (CT) images for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. In lung cancer cases, pulmonary nodules are typical pathological changes and thus they are the target to be detected by CAD systems. The isolated nodules can be detected more easily by CAD systems developed previously, while previous CAD systems are often hard to detect non-isolated nodules. The extraction technique can then be used for transforming the non-isolated pulmonary nodules connected to the walls of the chest into isolated ones. The technique proposed here is based on an active contour model, but such model is often trapped into a local optimum solution. To avoid the local optimum solutions, an essential core of the proposed technique is to select an appropriate initial contour by using an anatomical feature of the lung shape in X-ray CT slices. Some experimental results demonstrate the usefulness of the propose!
d technique for assisting the CAD systems to detect non-isolated nodules more accurately.

Abstract: Appearance-based face recognition techniques are appropriate for reducing the volume of computation for fast image analysis and classification. Face recognition plays a significant role in many security and forensic applications including person authentication for access control systems and person identification in real time video surveillance systems. This paper examines two appearance-based approaches for feature extraction and dimension reduction, namely, Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Numerical experiments were conducted on the ORL face database to investigate the effect of changing the number of training images, scaling factor, and the effect of feature vector length on the recognition rate. The results suggest that the effect of increasing the number of training images has more significance on the recognition rate than changing the image scale. Correlations obtained from numerical experiments on the ORL face datab!
ase suggest that as the number of training images increases, PCA would yield slightly higher recognition rates.

Abstract: This paper presents a control scheme, comprehensive analysis and result obtained for the dynamic control of power transmission, damping of oscillations with Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) on the basis of theory and computer simulations through MATLAB software. The system deals with the Multimachine system containing two generators, two transformers, five buses, three transmission lines & a load. UPFC is a controlled reactor having function of both static synchronous compensator (STATCOM )as well as static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) used with long transmission lines to control the dynamic and transient performance. The power system employed in this study is Multimachine model based on the result of simulation studies using MATLAB. These studies show that these controllers can provide satisfactory performance under wide variations in parameters. This report focuses on the damping of oscillations in power systems by incorporating an auxiliary control !
to UPFC i.e. power system Damping Controller (PSDC). It briefly discusses the role of power System Stabilizer (PSS) in damping local mode and inter-area oscillations. It also discusses the role of combination made by PSS and UPFC in damping power system oscillations during simulation studies, the position of UPFC is kept constant, at the midpoint of the transmission line. A three phase fault is induced in the transmission line using fault logic and the performance of the UPFC is studied by varying the parameters of PSDC. The magnitude of the fault and the time of application of the fault are kept constant. The simulation studies revealed that oscillations present after occurrence of fault are greatly reduced after PSS and UPFC combination

Abstract: In this paper we presented and classified various approaches for redundancy in the area of wireless sensor networks, related to sensing, communication and information processing. Sometimes an ally, sometimes a foe, redundancy is an inherent feature of sensor networks that has to be very carefully examined in order to improve important aspects of their functioning. Moreover, this paper presents two methodologies: one that implies both components of spatial redundancy and one that implies the use of temporal redundancy for achieving the objective of fault-tolerant and safe operation. In the end, the fields in which the redundancy could be applied with significant results are highlighted.

Abstract: An adaptive rate hybrid direct-sequence/fast frequency hopping code-division multiple-access (DS/FFH-CDMA) system operating in a Rayleigh fading environment is considered and its spectral efficiency, expressed in (bits/sec/Hz), is estimated in terms of the theoretically achievable average channel capacity (in the sense of information theory) per user. The analysis covers the operation over a broadcast single-cell time-varying system, applicable to the downlink of satellites, wireless local-area networks and single-cell indoor mobile sys-tems, and leads to a simple novel closed-form expression for the optimal number of simultaneously active users based on the maximization of the achieved spectral efficiency. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the proposed mathematical analysis.

Abstract: A genetic algorithm and a simulated annealing approach is presented for the guidance of a cellular automaton toward optimal configurations. The algorithm is applied to a problem of groundwater allocation in a rectangular area consisting of adjacent land blocks and modeled as a cellular automaton. The new algorithm is compared to a more conventional genetic algorithm and its efficiency is clearly demonstrated. Also, comparison is made to a simulated annealing scheme. Finally, the proposed genetic algorithm is combined with simulated annealing to yield a new hybrid. The presented cell – based algorithm is different from related algorithms of the literature, as it relies on local interactions among land blocks. Moreover, it offers a framework for application to more general and detailed problems.

Abstract: This study discusses the interaction effects of organizational factors and individual factors on safety performance. 465 employees from four colleges in central Taiwan completed a self-administered questionnaire. The researchers used a two-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) to analyze the data. The researchers found that there are interaction effects on safety performance between 1) size and accident experience; 2) safety committee and gender; 3) safety committee and accident experience; 4) location and accident experience. Because the interaction effects discovered are disordinal, safety managers must take measures to improve safety for different classes of employees in different kinds of organizations. Based on these results, the authors advise safety managers to take note of these interaction effects in order to raise the effectiveness and efficiency of safety improvements.

Abstract: This paper presents dynamic compensations in a micro hard drive. It reviews dynamic models of the drive in low-and high-frequency regions. The nonlinear friction compensation for low-frequency dynamic is achieved via a fuzzy logic controller. Forward and backward micro-step motion of the read/write head can be nicely performed. Resonance compensation for high-frequency dynamic is achieved via linear compensation. The paper presents some comparison studies of using a cascaded lead compensator, a complex lead-lag compensator, and a searched polynomial compensator. The compensated system's performance is enhanced further by stable nonlinear control. Detailed descriptions of modelling, design, simulation results, and analysis can be found in the paper.

Abstract: Abstract: - The article presents the performance evaluation of the management agent (MA) containing the adaptive tabu search (ATS) as its search core. In particular, asymmetrical surface optimization problems have been considered. It has been found that symmetrical property of the problems has a significant effect on search performance of the ATS, but MA(ATS). As an average, the MA(ATS) is about 2 times faster than the ATS under both symmetrical and asymmetrical problems. The article also gives reviews on the ATS and the MA(ATS) algorithms. An application on controller design for a coupled system with three-degree-of-freedom is also elaborated.

Abstract: Abstract: - Signals recorded from the human body provide valuable information about the biological activities of body organs. The spectral properties of different organs help in medical diagnosis. Even small changes in functioning of organs is indicated by the changes in their spectra. Fetal heart rate extraction from the abdominal ECG is of great importance because the information carried by it is helpful in assessing appropriately the fetus well-being during pregnancy. Fetal ECG is always contaminated by a drift and interference caused by several bioelectric phenomena, or by various types of noise, such as intrinsic noise from the recorder and noise from electrode-skin contact. The low Signal to noise Ratio of fetal ECG makes it difficult to analyze it effectively. Accurate detection of QRS complex is a pre-requisite in the assessment of fetal heart beat.In this paper we utilize an intelligent Adaptive Filter for noise cancellation in the effective extraction and!
analysis of fetal ECG. The PSO based adaptive noise cancellation technique is shown to be superior to the conventional FIR adaptive filtering.

Abstract: Abstract: - This paper presents an approach for the design of fuzzy logic power system stabilizers using genetic algorithms. In the proposed fuzzy expert system, speed deviation and its derivative have been selected as fuzzy inputs. In this approach the parameters of the fuzzy logic controllers have been tuned using genetic algorithm. Incorporation of GA in the design of fuzzy logic power system stabilizer will add an intelligent dimension to the stabilizer and significantly reduces computational time in the design process. It is shown in this paper that the system dynamic performance can be improved significantly by incorporating a genetic-based searching mechanism. To demonstrate the robustness of the genetic based fuzzy logic power system stabilizer (GFLPSS), simulation studies on multimachine system subjected to small perturbation and three-phase fault have been carried out. Simulation results show the superiority and robustness of GA based power system stabil!

Abstract: Abstract: This paper focuses on the design of robustness controller for asynchronous motor. a new PID neural network-integral (PIDNN-I) synthesis control strategy is proposed for the controller design, in which NARMA-L2, an approximated model of nonlinear auto regressive moving average(NARMA) model, is employed to represent the input-output behavior of the motor and gives out the expected control input. PID neurons network (PIDNN), as a kind of novel neural network model with dynamic characteristics, is adopted in NARMA-L2 to identify the motor. PIDNN integrates the advantages of PID with those of artificial neuron network. However, the conventional back-propagation (BP) algorithm, which easily gets trapped in local minimum and is being adopted in the current model, constrains the identifying ability of PIDNN so as to harm to the completion of the controller design. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, a new population-based evolutionary global optimization!
method, is proposed to replace the BP algorithm to train the neurons model. Cooperative particle swarm optimization (CPSO), an improved version of cooperative random learning particle swarm optimization (CRPSO), is put forward to enhance the performances of the conventional PSO in the design. Due to the existence of the tracking error caused by approximate error between identifying and real system, integral (I) control is introduced into the design, namely adopting PIDNN control in large tracking error scale and PIDNN-I control in small tracking error scale. Compared with conventional PID control strategy, simulation results demonstrate that the CPSO-based PIDNN-I synthesis control strategy has improved the control performances of asynchronous motor in robustness and accuracy efficiently.

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce "Knowledge Diagraph Contribution" (KDC) analysis as a novel categorical time-series method in observing underlying traversal knowledge structure of experts by exploiting varying hypertext (web) presentation formats and knowledge domains. The navigation behaviors were studied by designing hypertext presentation formats and domain text that adheres to content design principles inspired by discourse and text comprehension scholars. As a continuation of previous study by Ismaili & Golden [1], twenty undergraduate psychology students from University of Texas at Dallas participated in this study. Students traversed through different Hypertext (web) presentation formats while reading content from three different knowledge domains controlled for micro (web-page, web-site) and macro (consistent semantic connections across knowledge domains) characteristics. The influence of expertise and web traversal behavior in deriving underlying knowledge!
structures is presented using KDC analysis. In addition, previously reported Classical data analysis (ANOVA) are compared with KDC analysis in highlighting quantitative and qualitative differences of these derived latent knowledge structures. As compared with novice, experts tend to exhibit sequential and semantic traversal patterns across all three web formats, whereas, novices are more influenced by and therefore tend to employ random navigation strategies.

Abstract: Abstract : To build fully automated systems that analyze the information contained in face images, robust and efficient face detection algorithms are required. Automatic human face detection is considered as the initial process of any fully automatic system that analyzes the information contained in human faces (e.g., identity, gender, expression, age, race and pose). In this paper, color segmentation is used as a first step in the human face detection process followed by grouping likely face regions into clusters of connected pixels. Median filtering is then performed to eliminate the small clusters and the resulting blobs are matched against a face pattern (ellipse) subjected to constraints for rejecting non-face blobs. The system was implemented and validated for images with different formats, sizes, number of people, and complexity of the image background. The results obtained were very satisfactory in terms of face identification and performance.

Abstract: Most work in Artificial Intelligence reviews the balance of classic game theory to predict agent behavior in different positions. In this paper we introduce steady competitive analysis. This approach bridges the gap between the standards of desired paths of artificial intelligence, where a strategy must be selected in order to ensure an end result and a balanced analysis. We show that a strategy without risk level is able to guarantee the value obtained in the Nash equilibrium, by more scientific methods of classical computers. Then we will discuss the concept of competitive strategy and illustrate how it is used in a decentralized load balanced position, typical for network problems. In particular, we will show that when there are many agents, it is possible to guarantee an expected final result, which is a 8/9 factor of the final result obtained in the Nash equilibrium. Finally, we will discuss about extending the above concept in Bayesian game and illustrate its!

Abstract: This paper treats data reduction in array processing for the spatially colored noise case. The purpose is to reduce the computational complexity of the applied signal processing algorithms by mapping the data into a space of lower dimension by means of a linear transformation. We discuss ways to implement the transformation and show that it suffices to estimate the array covariance matrix instead of the noise covariance matrix in the design process of the optimal transformation. Computer simulations are given that illustrate the problem of interference from out-of-band-sources that result when a beamspace transformation is designed to focus on a particular sector. The presents an dynamic state estimator. The method uses ANN based bus load prediction for the prediction step in the DSE.

Abstract: Nowadays, optimization problems with a few thousands of variables become more common. Populationbased algorithms, such as Differential Evolution (DE), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithms (GAs), and Evolutionary Strategies (ES) are commonly used approaches to solve complex large-scale problems from science and engineering. These approaches all work with a population of candidate solutions. On the other hand, for high-dimensional problems, no matter what is the individuals' distribution, the population is highly sparse. Therefore, intelligent employment of individual candidates can play a crucial role to find optimal solution( s) faster. The most majority of population-based algorithms utilize pseudo-random population initialization when there is no a priori knowledge about the solution. In this paper, a center-based population initialization is proposed and investigated on seven benchmark functions. The obtained results are compared with the result!
s of Normal, Pseudo Random, and Latin Hypercube population initialization schemes. Furthermore, the advantages of the proposed center-based sampling method are investigated by a mathematical proof and also Monte Carlo (simulation) method. The detailed experimental verifications are provided for problems with 50, 500, and 1000 dimensions.

Abstract: Fault diagnosis depends largely on the feature analysis of vibration signals. However, feature extraction for fault diagnosis is difficult because the vibration signals often contain a strong noise component. Noises stronger than the actual fault signal may interfere with diagnosis and, ultimately, cause misdiagnosis. In order to extract the feature from the fault signal highly contaminated by the noise, and accurately identify the fault types, a novel diagnosis method is proposed based on the kurtosis wave and information divergence for fault detection of a rolling element bearing. A kurtosis wave (KW) is defined in the time domain using the vibration signal, and a method to obtain the kurtosis information wave (KIW) is also proposed based on Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence using the kurtosis wave. Practical example of diagnosis for the outer-race defect of a bearing is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. This paper also compares the prop!
osed method with the two envelope analysis techniques, namely the wavelet transform- and the FFT-based envelope analysis techniques. The analyzed results show that the feature of a bearing defect is extracted clearly, and the bearing fault can be effectively identified by the proposed method. However, the fault cannot be detected using either of the compared techniques.

Abstract: The rapid advances in computers have led to the implementation of advanced computer-based methods and new opportunities for the delivery of instruction in engineering education and practice. It is anticipated that the technology will continually change the way of which instruction is imparted throughout the educational system. This study is based on the assumption that students can better understand the difficult subjects by using animated lessons in addition to instructors' explanations called here as multi-board approach. Several modules on selected engineering freshmen courses based on perceptional and conceptual difficulties of the students are prepared. The main features of the developed courseware are (i) animated interactive learning materials, (ii) virtual and real video recording of lab experiments, and (iii) a web based learning environment. The courseware was tested and evaluated at different institutions. Student assessments of the instructional materia!
ls and the multi-board approach were obtained using quantitative evaluation questionnaires. The initial results indicated that this approach was helpful for learning and teaching.

Abstract: Considering the European electric power systems there is a yearly increased consumption of electricity everywhere (from 1% to even 4% in some cases). The processes of developing and connecting existing electric power systems are very complex. Preconditions for connecting two UCTE synchronous zones (1st and 2nd Pan-European synchronous zones) in one European electric power system were created in 2000. The UCTE synchronous zones were formed when the outage of the 400 kV overhead line Ernestinovo – Mladost on September 26, 1991 caused the system to separate. The reconnection was carried out on October 10, 2004 following the important decision which was passed by the UCTE Steering Committee at its meeting in early 2002 in Brussels. Static and dynamic analysis with respect to reconnection of electric power systems, such as transit analysis, analysis of capacity flows, short circuits, N-1, dynamic behavior, angle analysis, voltage stabilities, frequency oscillations, ch!
anges of capacity flows in a short time period, were outlined in the paper. Special attention is paid to the mathematical base significant for carrying out the analysis of conditions in certain electric power system.

Abstract: Errors arising from vagueness or imprecision are often associated with measurements in engineering. The capability of Fuzzy sets to express gradual transition from membership to non-membership and vice versa has broad utility, especially for codifying the types of inaccuracies identified in this paper. The overlap between two or more adjoining Fuzzy sets create very important Fuzzy "patch" that has to date received limited attention. The use the Min and Max Operators is based on the fact that grades of membership of data values are presumed to be known and specified. In practice however, data values that are generated dynamically by systems during operations often vary with time. In such cases, there is need to continuously generate the membership grade corresponding to every data value in a Fuzzy set. In the existing literature, Zadeh, Mamdani and Tagaki-Sugeno have established that the Min- and Max- operators can effectively be used for Fuzzy interpolative inf!
erence. But what has not been done is to define an explicit expression for determining membership function in the overlap region. This paper addresses that concern, as it proposes an alternative approach that gives a systematic determination of membership function based on the Fourier series representation of the envelope of the Fuzzy "patch".
