Abstract: Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are new models in wireless communication. A MANET includes a set of mobile nodes that can move freely and organize themselves into a dynamic network. In 1998, Volker and Mehrdad proposed a tree-based structure to a mobile node and a key management and access control scheme for protecting the confidential data of a mobile node. However, their scheme is need a large amount of storage for storing the secret keys. Recently, Chung et al. proposed a new scheme which is based on the polynomial interpolation formula. In this paper, we will demonstrate two security leaks inherent in Chung et al.¡¦s scheme that: (i) the malicious node can access unauthorized confidential files if he has the same confidential file(s) with other visited mobile node(s). (ii) the malicious nodes can access unauthorized confidential files by comparing old and new polynomials owned by the same mobile node. That is, Chung et al.¡¦s scheme cannot achieve their claimed!
security requirements. We further propose a robust hierarchical key management scheme for access control to eliminate the pointed out security leaks.
