Abstract: Some greenhouse emissions – methane and CO2 – were tracked in four locations in the Czech Republic and one of these is the deactivated coal mine in the region of Ostrava Karvina, the landfill in Nasavrky , the composting plant in the surroundings of Pardubice in Drazkovice and area of Doubravice village near Pardubice. A mobile analyser unit ECOPROBE 5 was used for the measurements. It was realized that in case some technical measures were implemented for the methane recovery and subsequent processing, there is neither danger of contamination in the surroundings, nor risk of explosion. Composting plant is a long-term source of CO2. Its emission concentration at the surface level reaches tenths of volume percentage. Methane is produced in minimal concentration. Another significant source of CO2 includes the local furnaces, transport and farms.

Abstract: The military operations and activities are affected by weather conditions. Relevant information from area of interest is necessary. Because of irregularly distributed information the interpolation must be used. Two methods of interpolation were developed and they are introduced in this article. The methods have considered not only horizontal dependence but also vertical dependence of values. Their fruitfulness for interpolation of SYNOP observations in Central Europe was tested by cross-validation and backward interpolation. The usage of the methods for interpolation of climate data is also discussed.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the agricultural use of carob (Ceratonia siliqua, L.) seed residues as a substrate and/or a soil organic amendment. The tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum L., cv. Realeza) was the studied crop. Plants were grown in pot filled with carob seed residues mixed with a sandy topsoil at the following rates (t/ha): 0; 10; 20; 30; 40; 50; 60; and 100 % of carob seeds. During the experiment, plant height, number of leaves, inflorescences, ripe fruits and the transversal and longitudinal diameters were measured weekly. Sandy soil, carob residues and soil and their mixtures were chemically analysed, in order to determine the following parameters: organic matter content, pH, electrical conductivity, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb contents. Cu, Cd, Ni and Pb concentrations were determined in the carob residues only just before mixing with the sandy soil. Carob seed residues alone (used as an organic substrate) treatmen!
t promoted the highest root density, plant development, as number of leaves and fruits, and the highest crop yield. Plants of the 100% carob seed residues treatment also showed the highest density of roots. The obtained results suggest that carob seed residues may be used successfully as an organic amendment and/or as a horticultural substrate, mainly to root crops.

Abstract: In this paper time evolving indices are defined and studied through the introduction of a population structure chancing during the time. These indices are useful to describe the concentration (or inequality) of the wealth in a stochastic model of the wealth evolution. Here some static indices usually used in literature are generalized. In particular the paper shows how it is possible to generalize the Herfindahl-Hirschman and Gini indices and the Theil's entropy. These indices become stochastic processes of which the moments and the asymptotic behavior is provided. A computation of such indices and their asymptotic behavior in different economical scenarios concludes the paper.

Abstract: A portion of five vertebrate species microRNA (miRNA) genes are found to associate with CpG-islands. It is calculated that 74 of 462 (16.0%), 37 of 373 (9.9%), 25 of 234 (10.7%), 25 of 149 (16.8%) and 11 of 177 (6.2%) of the miRNA genes are located within 1000 bp of a CpG-island for human, mouse, rat, chicken and frog respectively. A statistical test is proposed to quantify the probability distribution of the relative distance between a miRNA gene and a CpG-island, the results suggested that there could be some spatial association between them. In the human and mouse samples the Fisher¡¦s exact test indicated that some of the promoter-related miRNA genes are CpG-island-associated. These findings suggest that a potential role of these miRNAs related to CpG-island methylation, which deserve further investigation. A web-based interface has been implemented to facilitate data display, in which the vertebrate CpG-associated miRNA genes results are publicly available.

Abstract: European integration has increased the transport of illegal goods and other criminal activity. Therefore the transmitting of tracking and other status information between nations and different organizations should become an everyday business. The goal of this paper is to find possible bottle necks in international cooperation between authorities and to find possible solutions for them. The following area can be considered as a part of the Finnish SATERISK research project that aims for a situation where laws on positioning and tracking and the financial risks posed by their usage will not prevent the use of m2m tracking across state and union borders. Abstract: Problems of analysis and optimization of axisymmetric shells of piece wise constant thickness are studied. The cases of quasistatic and dynamic loading are considered separately whereas the shells may be manufactured from both, elastic and inelastic materials. Minimum weight designs of inelastic shells of piece wise constant thickness are established under the condition that the limit load is fixed. Also the designs of maximum load carrying capacity are determined for given weight (material volume) of the shell. Necessary optimality conditions are derived with the aid of variational methods of the theory of optimal control. Particular cases of maximization of the load carrying capacity of spherical caps and conical shells are studied in a greater detail in the cases of von Mises and Hill's materials.

Visible damages were identified, effects on phtosynthetic pigment levels (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and total charotenoids), soluble proteins content and nutrients concentrations (Ca2+, Mn2+, Mg2+ and K+) were determined. All mangrove species studied showed sensitiveness to ozone exposure levels, being Red mangrove the most sensitive specie to tropospheric ozone.

Abstract: Recent systems have been paved the way for being high-performance due to the super-pipelining, dynamic scheduling and superscalar processor technologies. The performance of the system is greatly affected by the accuracy of the branch prediction because the overhead of each misprediction has grown due to greater number of instructions per cycle and the deepened pipeline. Hybrid branch prediction is usually used to increase the prediction accuracy on such high-performance systems. Normally hybrid branch prediction uses several branch predictors. A meta-predictor selects which branch predictor should be used corresponding to the program context of the branch instruction instance for the branch prediction. In this paper, we discuss about the saturating counter within meta predictor. The design of the saturating counter which selects a predictor that has high-prediction ratio has brought out the high accuracy of the prediction for the branch predictor.

Abstract: In this paper, the problem of target tracking in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) using quantized innovations is investigated from the perspective of cross-layer design. Unlike previous work that designs the tracking algorithm in a single layer, e.g. the application layer, we design the tracking algorithm incorporating the channel statistics in the application layer, and exporting to the link layer to schedule the sensors. The motivation for this study is twofold, incorporating the channel statistics to improve the tracking accuracy and scheduling the sensor nodes to reduce power consumption. Specifically, activated sensors first report their quantized innovations to a fusion center (FC) over noisy wireless channels that modeled as binary symmetric channels (BSCs). The FC estimates the target state in terms of the noisy-corrupted quantized innovations from local sensors based on sequential importance resampling (SIR) particle filtering. The imperfection of the wirel!
ess channels between the sensors and the FC are incorporated in the tracking algorithm, for which the posterior Cram¨¦r-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) are derived. Then, an energy-efficient sensor scheduling strategy is proposed based on an optimization problem that minimizing the derived posterior CRLBs with a constraint on the total energy consumption. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional algorithm significantly with reduced energy consumption.

Abstract: The paper decribes the principle of the weapon with together bound of barrels and breeches at first. Abstract: A reciprocal gas flow burner is computationally simulated for obtaining its stable operation region in terms of equivalence ratio and filtration velocity, for two energy losses configurations schemes. Equivalence ratio and filtration velocity were considered over the range [0.1, 1.0] and [0.25, 1.0] (m/s). The one-dimensional mathematical model consider that porous media is made by alumina bolls of 5.6 mm diameter , which fill up a quartz hollow cylinder of 5 cm diameter and 50 cm high. The mathematical model includes total mass preservation laws, momentum and enthalpy for the solid as for the gas. Combustion is modeled through global chemical reaction in one step. Chemical kinetic of methane combustion is treated on the base of Arrhenius approximation. It is considered besides that system heat transport occurs at conditions without local thermal equilibrium and includes convections mechanisms, conduction and thermal radiation. Lateral heat losses from the system t!
o environment through cylinder lateral surface were studied at two scenarios: reactor coupled with and without heat exchangers. Mathematical model are discretized by finite differences method through implicit scheme and its solution reached by TDMA algorithm. Uniform grid with 801 nodes and time step Ät = 0.01 (s) gave solution independence. Results demonstrated increased stabilization in temperature profile, thus increased stabilization region for the reactor coupled with heat exchangers.

Abstract: This paper provides a detailed picture on computer networks and especially on wireless networks, focusing on specific characteristics of wireless systems. By using MIMO technology (Multiple Input Multiple Output), network logon ca be realized at distances much greater. The use of antennas allows reception and transmission of multiple data streams simultaneously, and the router gives a much better quality of data transmission and added safety. For network security is available WEP encryption on 64 or 128 bits. Technology and wireless services now offered by manufacturers and retailers are moving quickly to satisfy all communication needs. Requests for services and improved functionality, both in public domain and in the business domain, led to the development of wireless technology to offer type services of "anywhere / anytime" for transparent interconnection of voice / data / video with existing network and Internet access through service providers.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present a multi-agent based approach for negotiation in crisis management. We propose to harness the potential of the multi-agent system (MAS) technology for constructing a framework of cooperation agents that are capable of delivering an optimal solution for crisis. Supply Chain study is adopted more and more for the companies' competitiveness development. Our industrial partner EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company) handles a logistic flows demonstrator for crisis management, developed by our research team. A Multi-Agent architecture is planned to design a distributed supply chain. In this paper, we propose to adopt an advanced interaction between the autonomous entities. Therefore, we propose a multi agent based architecture for crisis management supply chain. A new form of negotiation is presented to avoid, in a crisis situation, the stock-out by balancing the resources provisions throughout the system.

Abstract: This paper deals with Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) on Borel spaces with an infinite horizon and a discounted total cost. It will be considered a stochastic optimal control problem which arises by perturbing the transition law of a deterministic control problem, through an additive random noise term with coefficient epsilon. In the paper, we will analyze the behavior of the optimal solution (optimal value function and optimal policy) of the stochastic system, when the coefficient epsilon goes to zero. Specifically, conditions given in the paper guarantee the uniform on compact sets convergence of both the optimal value function and the optimal policy of the stochastic system to the optimal value function and the optimal policy of the deterministic one, when epsilon goes to zero, respectively. Finally, two examples which illustrate the developed theory are presented.

Abstract: Techniques for forecasting the minimum temperature are mostly empirically based, using collections of statistics over a long period of time for a range of weather situations. The very popular method is McKenzie's method, which uses the maximum temperature and the dew-point at the time of maximum temperature, together with a set of correction factors for cloud and wind. Main aim is to adjust the corrections to aerodromes currently used by Czech air force. Adjustment of McKenzie technique to the territory of Czech Republic could be very useful tool in particular forecast, especially in forecast of dangerous weather phenomena that are linked with minimal temperature prediction, e.g. forecasting of road surface conditions etc. "The Road meteorology" is a branch of an applied meteorology, which deals with the meteorological elements and phenomena in the light of their influence over running of communication, namely the major roads and motorways on a given territory incl!

Abstract: A novel supply chain operational transport planning model is developed in this paper. The goals of the model are to minimize the number of used trucks and the total inventory levels. Because of somewhat imprecise nature of vehicle capacities and decision makers' aspiration levels for the goals, a fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (FMOLP) modeling approach is adopted. Moreover, an interactive solution methodology is proposed to determine the preferred compromise solution. An industrial case from a real-world automobile supply chain demonstrates the feasibility of applying the proposed model and the solution methodology to a realistic operational transport planning problem. The computational results indicate that the proposed approach improves the results obtained by the heuristic decision-making procedure spreadsheet-based which is actually applied in the automobile supply chain under study.

Abstract: The precision casting and production of titanium alloy golf head is a complex and low production efficient industry in Taiwan. Due to the increasing global competition, high energy cost and explosive manpower growth, the golf head casting industry seek new approaches in the production processes and manufacturing techniques to improve productivity efficiency. This paper proposes a modeling tool based on the Petri net formalism to improve shop floor control of casting. The manufacturing golf head functions involving workflow processes and operations, scheduling, dispatching and monitoring are integrated and mapped by the Petri net model. The realistic data from industry are applied to the model and the results are sound. The overall manufacturing performance of the work cell can be estimated and improved cyclically to better performance.

Abstract: It has been widely acknowledged that ambiguous or incomplete customer requirements are a major reason for the failure of software development projects. A key example of this is the inconsistency between implementation image and specifications provided in the early stages of software development. To address this, we propose a method for automatic generation of user interface prototypes for developing Web-based business applications, based on the requirements specifications defined in the Unified Modeling Language (UML). Abstract: In this work, we determine all possible angular momentum matrix elements arising in the variational treatment of the rovibrational molecular Hamiltonian. In addition, the logic of the associated computing process is organized in a series of decision tables. Using Shwayder´s approach, information theory is applied to obtain optimal computing codes from the decision tables. The needed decision rules apparition frequencies are computed as a function of the rotational quantum number J. Using these values, we show that the codes obtained are optimal for any value of J. In all cases, the optimal codes exhibit an efficiency of at least a 97% of the theoretical maximum. In addition, pessimal codes are obtained as a counterpart of the optimal ones. We find that the efficiency difference between the optimal and pessimal codes reaches quickly a limit for increasing values of the J quantum number.

Extinction of species in an ecosystem, reducing or increasing their number beyond the limits of normal numerical oscillations, modification of environmental factors are situations that can make threaten in the existing balance of nature, creating the need for protection measures to those ecosystems. Most countries of the world and especially European ones show a real concern about the wasteful use of components of biological diversity, combined with general lack of information and knowledge thereof, and the failure of institutional capacity, technical and scientific, to provide the deepening environmental degradation phenomena at the continental and national levels. Closed and traditional dependence of human communities and habitats in which they live, their conservation need, from the perspective of sustainable development, are prompted by organizing of a unitary system of pr!
otected areas in Romania. In this context, Bucegi Natural Park is located entirely in the homonymous mountains in Southern Carpathians. It is located within the counties Dâmboviþa, Prahova and Braºov, having a rich and varied biodiversity, found in both ecosystems and plant and animal species of wild fauna and flora, some of their having precious value and uniqueness. In the later time, anthropogenic impact on biodiversity has increased considerably, mainly referring to the organization and the various socio-economic activities such as exploitation of resources, constructions, deforestations, uncontrolled tourism, grazing abuses, etc., by creating pressure on the landscape. In this regard, on notice the change of landscapes and ecosystems, destruction and even their disappearance.

Abstract: In this study effects that are significant on the fuel consumption of F-4 aircrafts are analyzed by using different statistical methods and the results of those different methods are compared. The response variable of every possible combination of factors and interactions are analyzed to provide information about main effect(s) and interaction effect(s). MARS is applied in order to find the relationship and a tree model in order to summarize the relationship of main effects and the interactions on a plot. Also a 25 factorial experiment with 4 replications is performed to determine the significant main effects and interactions. The analysis is repeated for one-half fractional factorial experiment. A comparison of performance of the methods is made in order to investigate their applicability.

Abstract: In several countries the curricula for the different degrees of the universities is changing to adapt it to the Anglo-Saxon model of four years. In this context, several degrees must reduce the hours for classroom and this affects in a higher way to some subjects. Some of them can see reduced their teaching hours even to the half. So, it is necessary to adopt some measures in order to maintain the level of the degree (it would be very difficult to increase this level in such situation of reducing a lot of teaching hours) and to take advantage of the change and adapt the subjects to the new century and technologies. One of these measures that we can take is to use the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) out of the classroom. In this way, we are developing a vodcast. The information in electronic form (as well as the access to this information) has very specific characteristics and the aim of all of us who make use of this information is getting the most!
out. Simply to prepare a text and place in cyberspace is wasting much of the potential we have at our disposal. To insert static images helps to improve the information. Accompanying text with audio enriches considerably the text. And to produce a combined video image and sound is the most comprehensive offering that can be done to anyone seeking information. Vodcasting can be a powerful tool to use in some subjects. The generalization of this idea is not probed. But we are developing our vodcast for subjects of Mathematics of the first year of Engineering degrees and it seems that the tool is very well accepted by students.

Abstract: This paper focusses on the study of the Map Alignment problem in a multirobot SLAM context. Given a team of robots, we consider the situation in which each robot is building its own local map independently. These maps are landmark-based and three-dimensional. The local maps built by the different robots will have different reference systems. At some point, it may be interesting to express all maps in the same reference system. In that way, the maps can be fused into a unique global one. This is known as the map fusion problem and can be tackled by dividing the problem into two subproblems: map alignment and map merging. In this paper, we concentrate on the map alignment problem which consist on computing the transformation between the local maps so that we have one reference system. We therefore evaluate a set of aligning methods. These methods establish correspondences between each pair of maps and compute an initial estimate of the alignment. Finally, we apply !
the least squares minimization to obtain a more accurate solution. We also concentrate on the case in which we want to align more than two local maps. In this case, the alignment must be globally consistent. For the experiments, real data are used. Each robot extracts distinctive 3D points from the environment with a stereo camera. Then, the robots use these observations as landmarks to build their maps while simultaneously localize themselves. The SLAM problem is solved using the FastSLAM algorithm. The movements of the robots occur only in 2D plane, so although the maps are 3D landmark-based, the alignment takes place only in 2D.

Abstract: For a system of a given shape, there exists a critical size for which the rate of production of neutrons from fission reactions just equals the rate of removal of neutrons. For a long cylindrical rod, using parabolic transient Fick¡¦s laws of diffusion and simultaneous autocatalytic reaction, a critical radius for the system can be calculated as: Where ƒÑ1 is the first zero of the zero-order Bessel function J0, k1¡¨¡¦ is the autocatalytic first order reaction rate and DAB binary neutron diffusivity. This limit is referred to as the shape limit of nuclear fuel rod. Above this size, autocatalytic runaway can be expected. The transient concentration profile in a long cylindrical rod during simultaneous diffusion and autocatalytic reaction using the generalized Fick¡¦s laws of molecular diffusion and relaxation was derived. A lower limit on the radius of the fuel rod is obtained in order to avoid cycling of concentration ni the time domain during transience. !
The lower limit on the radius of the long cylindrical rod subject to simultaneous autocatalytic reaction and diffusion exist and found to be . Closed form analytical solution for transient concentration profile for simulataneous autocatalytic reaction and finite speed diffusion is derived using the method of separation of variables and by the method of Laplace transforms. The solution is bifurcated. At large relaxation times, the time portion of the solution is cosinous albeit damped by the decaying exponential. Both the cycling limit and shape limits have to be considered during design of nuclear fuel rod systems. The shape limit was derived from steady state considerations. The lower cycling limit was derived from transient finite speed diffusion considerations.

Abstract: The conventional sliding mode controller needs the exact knowledge of system state measurements. In this study, nonlinear second order systems with unmeasured system states and bounded external disturbances are considered. The sliding mode observer based on nonlinear observation error dynamics is considered and the observer gain is adjusted by using a support vector machine based plant model. From the output of the support vector machine model, k-step ahead predictions are obtained. Therefore, the value of k is first analyzed to search for a proper value. It is also shown with the simulations that the stability conditions are satisfied for the chosen observer gains. Computer simulations are presented to show the effect of the proposed gain adjustment mechanism on the performance of output feedback sliding mode controller. It is seen that the trajectory tracking performance is improved with respect to a conventional output feedback sliding mode control scheme having!

Abstract: In this paper, an improved topology of Buck type AC chopper voltage regulator and its control strategy are proposed. This converter only using two power switches is low cost, easy implemented and the phase synchronized circuit is not needed. The current path is provided in dead-time period by using simple snubber circuit. The over-voltage protection varistor is also applied to absorb the voltage spikes which may destroy the power switches. The voltage spikes in dead-time mode commutation is greatly reduced and the power switches are protected. Furthermore, the feedforward and feedback control strategy is proposed to suppress fluctuations and eliminate the harmonic components caused by power quality problems of the input voltage. The proposed converter could realize wide range voltage regulation with high power transfer efficiency and low total harmonic distortion. The steady-state equivalent circuit and the input power factor are derived through theoretical analysi!
s. The output filter design method is also presented. Based on the theoretical analysis and calculation, an experimental prototype is setup. The simulation and experiment results verify the validity of the proposed design.

Abstract: The robustness to noise in speaker identification systems is improved by applying Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). In this work, essential speaker features are used to investigate the identification accuracy in non-stationary signals. These features are extracted using Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and CWT for speech signals. In order to classify extracted features, a Feed Forward Back Propagation Neural Network (FFBNN) is imposed, since it gives better classification accuracy over conventional methods. A simulation program used to test the performance of the proposed method at certain level of SNR (-6dB), showed a classification ratio equal to 99.7%.

Abstract: Nowadays there are a vast number of devices and technologies available for the common citizen to improve their communication with others. This fosters the design and implementation of systems that explore the available features of these devices. In this paper, we propose a Bluetooth-based interactive system for delivering personalized information in high education institutions. The system allows informing, on a personalized way, the actors of an education institution on a free way using popular communication standards. The scenario we promote in the paper is mainly focused on learning environments, however the framework is also applicable in other shared public and semi-public spaces such as offices, homes, companies and many others. One of the most important contributions of this work is to combine public displays and personal mobile devices for delivering personalized information according to the students' location. A prototype has been built and discussed with d!
emonstrative user scenarios. Early results show that teachers and students found some advantages in this system comparing to traditional approaches. This system can effectively support a wide range of activities for students. It provides to each student the possibility to have a personal interaction with the technology in an authentic and appropriate use context. Features like the system's architecture, prototype and system's evaluation are explained in the paper. Results show that this system can be an important complement to other popular systems in education environments (e.g. e-mail, chats, Wikis, forums, e-learning platforms etc.).

Abstract: Circular time-averaging moiré technique is exploited to hide an image in a background moiré grating. The secret image can be visualized when the encoded image is oscillated around a pre-defined axial point. It is a new visual decoding scheme when the secret image is embedded into a circular moiré grating and can be interpreted by a naked eye. The encoded secret image is not shared into components; this is a one image method. Computational examples are used to demonstrate the functionality of the method. The property of the human visual system to average fast dynamical processes being not able to follow rapid oscillatory motions is exploited to decode the secret image.

Abstract: We explore the problem of memory-enhanced stability occurring in a fractional oscillator with fluctuating eigenfrequency when the oscillator is driven by external sinusoidal forcing and by an additive internal fractional noise with a power-law type memory. It is established that at intermediate values of the memory exponent the energetic stability of the oscillator is significantly enhanced. We show that, by conveniently choosing the system parameters, the output signal-to-noise ratio is a double peaked function of the memory exponent, thus demonstrating the phenomenon of memory controlled stochastic multiresonance. The connection between the occurrence of energetic instability and the phenomenon of memory-induced multiresonance is established.

Abstract: There exists a clear difference between cooperative and competitive strategies. The former ones are based on the swarm colonies, in which all individuals share its knowledge about the goal in order to pass such information to other individuals to get optimum solution. The latter ones are based on genetic models, that is, individuals can die and new individuals are created combining information of alive one; or are based on molecular/celular behaviour passing information from one structure to another. A Grammatical Swarm model is applied to obtain the Neural Network topology of a given problem, training the net with a Particle Swarm algorithm in R. This paper just shows some ideas in order to obtain an automatic way to define the most suitable neural network topology for a given patter set. High dimension problem is also mentioned when dealing with the particle swarm algorithm.

Abstract: The edge of the Information Age, where information has become the cutting edge of global competition, has thrust the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into the fore front of the national socio-economic development. ICT has been recognized as a strategic enabling tool to support the growth of the economy as well as enhance the quality of life of the population. The public sector in Malaysia is going through period of rapid change. The government's leading role in spearheading the surge forward into the information age has compelled the public sector to lead the way. The Government launched the Electronic Government (e-Government) initiative to reinvent itself to lead the country into the Information Age. Implementation of Electronic Procurement (e-Procurement or locally known as e-Perolehan) is regarded as one of the major milestones in government's effort to reduce corruption thus enhancing accountability and transparency of government procurement. The!
re are six procurement modules being implemented since 1999. The aim of the government is to make all the suppliers and federal government agencies become electronic procurement enabled users by the year 2010. This paper looks at some of empirical findings from the survey conducted regarding the government suppliers readiness in adopting and using the e-Procurement system. The general findings show that the suppliers have positive perception about information technology and the use of Internet to do their business transactions; hence they are ready to use the e-Procurement system. Even though there are some positive development of e-Procurement in terms of the acceptance and usage, there are also many problems and challenges faced by both the buyer community i.e. government, and seller community i.e. suppliers. The paper provides some recommendations to improve the current practice to encourage more suppliers to grab the opportunity and benefit fully from the e-Procurement !
initiative in Malaysia.

Abstract: A method to generate a quintic B-spline curve which passes through the given points is described. In this case, there are four more unknown control point positions than there are equations. To overcome this problem three methods are described. First, solve the underdetermined system as it stands. Secondly, decrease the number of unknown control point positions in an underdetermined system in order to convert it to a determined system. Third, a method to increase the number of equations is employed to change an underdetermined system to a determined system. In addition to this, another method to generate a quintic B-spline curve using given points with gradients in sequence is described. In this case, a linear system will be either overdetermined, determined or underdetermined. This depends on the number of given points with gradients in sequence. Additionally, a method to modify a quintic B-spline curve is described. The objective is to change an aestheti!
cally unpleasing curve to an aesthetically pleasing curve. Algebraic functions are used to determine an aesthetically pleasing radius of curvature distribution. This is accomplished by minimizing the difference between the quintic B-spline curves radius of curvature and the specified radius of curvature using the least-squares method. Examples of curve generation are given.
