Abstract: By using cross layer optimizations, mobile ad-hoc network can be made to work in a highly efficient manner with respect to power consumption and other related parameters. Such optimization requires an efficient radio design and a proper MAC protocol which can bring down the power consumption by optimizing the radio's sleep time, and transmission power on per packet basis. These two layers take care of mitigating the power usage in a single hop scenario. However routing in MANET involves communication through multiple hops. This leads to the need for a network layer protocol which can establish power efficient routes and can thereby decrease the power consumed by individual nodes and also the network as a whole. In this paper we present PAR 23 (on demand power aware routing) protocol which can establish energy efficient routes in a mobile network. We have used the basic frame work of AODV and suitably modified it in our protocol. We show through simulation that our!
protocol can outperform AODV with respect to power(10-12%), throughput(1-3%), percentage of packets delivered and the number of broken links(40-50% less), under various conditions. This enhances the battery life of individual nodes and thus the operational life time of the network.
