Abstract: Flow simulations around a generic pickup truck are carried out using a finite volume based CFD code. Simulated velocity and surface pressure distributions are compared with the corresponding experimental data obtained by using PIV. Both simulated and experimental results indicate that the wake of the truck is unsteady and contains two regions, one comprised of a large vortex rotating about a horizontal axis above the truck bed, and the other comprised of two symmetric vortex streaks behind the tailgate. The comparisons between time-averaged measurements and computations revealed that the CFD calculations were able to track the flow trends very well; however, the ability of the code to accurately predict the absolute values was limited.
