Abstract: This paper addresses the challenge of developing new pedagogical tools, trying to contribute with other approaches to the continuous improvement of the undergraduate teaching through the reporting of an experience of project-based learning implementation, begun on the Mechanical Engineering course at the University of Brasilia, which passes beyond the limits of the Faculty of Technology (FT). The project-based learning thread allows the students to have articulation with the professional reality, to acquire new technical skills related to the project, to comprehend the relationship between theory and practice. Also, the project-based learning allows developing of soft skills, such as the accomplishment of collaborative activities, the explanation of ideas and problems in an accessible way, oral and written communication, the conduct of meetings, decision making, conflicts management and projects management. The importance given to these features in a professional h!
as not been matched in the curricula of engineering courses in Brazil, leaving the responsibility for training these skills to the job market. This work shows how was established the conditions for creating an environment for the development of interdisciplinary projects, allowing opportunities for the construction of technical and non-technical knowledge, and its application in engineering problems. Considering the pre-existing social, political and ideological conditions in the institution and the consequent difficulties of structural changes in the curricula of engineering, the learning environment is being done without changing the curricula. The experiment was conceived from a proposal that foresaw the creation of three design disciplines throughout the mechanical engineering course. The implementation of the proposal can be characterized in three steps: in the first one, a set of disciplines from the Mechanical Engineering curriculum or "target-subjects" were chosen a!
ccording to the projects to be accomplished; the second step is charac
terized by projects whose thematic is chosen in order to involve other courses of FT; finally, the third step aims to encompass wider scope projects. The report concerns the period from 2007 to 2010 covering the first two steps of implementation. Aspects of the implementation such as number of students involved, related disciplines and institutional support are discussed.
