Abstract: The Multimedia Communication Systems (MCS) course focuses on multimedia data representation and transmission over communications networks. This paper illustrates some pedagogical techniques used to maximize learning results and facilitate creating a mindset that can drive further innovation for this domain. Besides presenting multimedia standards and communication techniques, these methods focus on setting a system view approach, understanding parameters that influence or control the multimedia systems. They also allow determining the handful of concepts that govern the entire field of multimedia compression, formats and network communications based on the Information Theory and Coding paradigms.
