Abstract: Selection of advanced materials for applications that require optimization of large number of properties, technical, technological or financial, presents considerable difficulties, considering necessity to optimize multiple factors. Electric heating elements represent an interesting case, since they are produced at larger scale and material selection should be financially feasible and properties should be evaluated from multiple points of view, such as mechanical, electrical, processing and manufacturing, thermal stability and corrosion resistance. So far, material selection for current applications relies mostly on classical, matrix or graphs methods. Classical methods are not always able to optimize complex situations and standard matrix methods involve logical decision, but are not completely objective and are difficult to apply when a large number of material properties are involved in decision processes. Graphs are easier to apply even in the case of large num!
ber of properties of materials, remain a partially subjective method, but they are more efficient to implement if computers technology are used. The present paper tests the graph method on two most important components of the electric heating elements, which are resistive wire and protective sheath.
