Abstract: Recent boom of mobile applications has become a novel characteristic required in wireless sensor networks. Due to mobility, the neighbors are changed dynamically and the connections with the mobile node are prone to break up. How to build up connections for the mobile nodes with its new neighbors in time is an important issue that has close relationships with Medium Access Control. Most existing MAC protocols mainly focus on static network in which fixed periodic neighbor discovery and schedule updating are generally used to connect and synchronize among neighbors for successful data transmission, which could not adapt to mobile speed variation and depredates the network performance dramatically. In this paper, we propose a mobile-supporting mechanism based on S-MAC that the decision to update neighbors of the mobile node is made adaptively according to the moving speed to avoid the mobile node disconnect from the network and save energy. The mechanism includes two!
parts at the MAC layer: neighbor updating and schedule synchronization for connection setup with the mobile node. Simulation results demonstrate that the mechanism performs better in terms of main performance parameters: packet loss, energy efficiency, delay, and throughput compared with the MS-MAC, a recent modification to S-MAC in scenarios involving mobile nodes.
