Abstract: Past attempts in creating virtual shadow puppet play only allowed the creation of shadow puppet images and predetermined animation of the storyline for the shadow play. This paper describes the techniques and implementation of the virtual shadow puppet play that produces real time simulation of shadow image using OpenGL. Besides, the novelty of this work is that it allows interactive real time animation of virtual shadow puppet play by applying both the texture mapping and the blending technique in the implementation of the shadow image and special effects. The integration of these methods gives the special lighting effects that are vital for the quality improvement of the traditional shadow puppet play. In addition, the use of geometric transformations and hierarchical modeling facilitates interaction among the different parts of the puppet during the animation. Based on the result of the experiments that measure the satisfaction of several respondents, the outcom!
e is considered to be highly successful.
