Abstract: Content based image retrieval (CBIR), is retrieval of images based on some query or example image. Earlier retrieval was based on annotation of images that is, by assigning names to the images. But, due to the enormous increase in image database sizes, as well as the World Wide Web, annotation of images has become a difficult job and the need for CBIR development arose. CBIR extracts some important features of an query image as well as database images and compares the images in the database with Query image. In this work the features 'color and texture' are extracted using Hue, saturation intensity (H S I) Color model and Gabor filters respectively. The extracted features are compared using two similarity measures namely Euclidean and Mahalanobis distance measures. Results are compared for the two different distance measures.
