Abstract: The application of silver in photographic industry or in other silver containing products contributed the increase of silver ions in wastewaters. Due to the harmful effects of silver ions in water and strict regulation of silver discharge, silver removal and reuse are of great importance. The aim of the present work was to investigate silver sorption with use of different cation-exchange resins (Dowex 50Wx4, Ionenaustauscher I and IV), and anion-exchange resins (Lewatit M 5020, Ionenaustauscher II and Dowex 2) and elution of sorbed silver ions with several elution solutions (Na2S2O3, HNO3, KCNS, KCN, NH4OH, (NH2)2CO and KI). In order to achieve improved silver removal, the sorption and elution tests were investigated in a batch system. The optimal silver sorption was achieved with use of Ionenaustauscher I and Ionenaustauscher II in the presence of 1 mol/L KI. The optimal silver elution was dependant on type of cation and anion exchangers. According to obtained res!
ults, for the optimal elution from cation and anion exchange resins, 2 mol/L HNO3 and 2 mol/L NH4OH was selected as the best eluent solutions, respectively. The obtained results clearly indicated that the Ionenaustauscher II were the most effective for silver sorption and elution.
