Abstract: Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) are one organization that facing challenges to manage its Organizational Memory (OM). The scattered and unstructured knowledge in IHL could be managed using Organizational Memory System (OMS). However scope of knowledge in IHL is too broad for an initial study to begin. This study prepares a base of developing IHL OMS by classifying knowledge in closer to academic environment. The classification was base on 23 years analysis of selected organizational memory system (OMS) model, and focus on OM types and knowledge management technology in IHL. This research found basic understanding of OM, and produce knowledge taxonomy and metadata for IHL, as a base to develop IHL OMS; Malaysia scenario. Further study can be conducted to validate and verify the developed knowledge taxonomy and metadata with current academic environment.
