Abstract: This paper is focusing on detailed study of deriving theoretical expressions to measure the evolution of expected population variance of Differential Evolution (DE) variants. The step by step derivation of the expressions to evaluate the population variance of the DE variants with binomial recombination DE/best/1/bin, DE/best/2/bin, DE/rand/2/bin, DE/current-to-rand/1/bin, DE/current-to-best/1/bin and DE/rand-to-best/1/bin is discussed, by directly extending the work done by Zahrie for DE/rand/1/bin. The study includes comparing the theoretical and empirical evolution of population variance of these variants of differential evolution (DE) algorithm. The aim is to analyze the behavior of DE variants in the light of their explorative power. The derived expressions are validated by matching their result with the empirical one.
