Abstract: Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a non traditional process that can machine the hard material like titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V). In spite of numerous advantages of EDM, no sound theoretical ground is observed for selecting the suitable parameters to obtain a specific output. Hence this paper emphasizes to develop a regression model to estimate the surface roughness of Ti-6Al-4V material in EDM process adopting the response surface methodology (RSM). Beside this the optimum values of the parameters are ascertained to get the finest surface finish. Three parameters as pulse on duration, pulse off duration and current is considered as input whilst the surface finish is output. The experimentation is completed successfully according to the design of experiment using the copper tungsten as tool. Statistical analysis of variance is performed that evidence the developed mathematical equation can assess the surface roughness properly. The results yields that 2A curren!
t, 400 µs pulse on duration and 232 µs pulse off duration having the finest surface. Accordingly it can be used as a tool in die, mold and manufacturing industries.
