Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents a serious health problem and the search for additional prognostic factors is on going. In this study we wanted to examine the expression of Matrix Metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) by immunohistochemical method in colorectal cancer and its relation to clinicopathological features. Sixty eight consecutive patients with CRC were treated at our center were chosen to participate. Representative samples from each tumor were stained immunohistochemically for MMP-1. Its intensity expression was graded as positive or negative. Normal colon tissue samples were used for control. In general the survival curve of the positive MMP-1 patients was worse than that of the negative ones, but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.125). However, survival time was significantly shorter for patients with positive MMP-1 who did not receive chemotherapy treatment than the negative ones, (p = 0.019). When considering the gender of the patient!
, survival time showed a statistically significant difference between male patients with positive and negative MMP-1 indication (p = 0.04), but the difference for female patients was not statistically significant.
