Abstract: The Malaysian Qualification Framework (MQF) identifies abilities to search, evaluate, organize, analyze, synthesize, use, and communicate information; known as information skills, as desirable learning outcomes for Malaysian university students. Although the framework implicated university teachers to integrate information skills across classroom teaching and learning, the phenomenon of "students learning information skills", particularly in Malaysian higher education, is rarely examined from the teachers' perspectives. To add to existing studies, this study explored the landscape of "students learning information skills" in the context of Malaysian higher learning using the emic perspective of university teachers. Employing a qualitative approach, this study observed information skills classes and interviewed five teachers who engaged their students in the classes. The study found teachers perceived "students learning information skills" as students participating !
in progressive and multi-dimensional information practices that act as a pathway for students to systematically and transparently construct understanding. Teachers further reflected the practices are supported by several pillars that enable students to participate in the practices. Following the perception, teachers further employed various instructional approaches to engage students in the pillars of the information practices. The study also found underpinning the perception is teachers' beliefs about ways of knowing characterized by source of knowledge and justification for knowing. The findings are useful to assist teachers, librarians, administrators, and others members of university communities in Malaysia to engage in collaborative efforts to transform university students into knowledge and innovation creators as required by the national education framework.
