Abstract: Hydrogen is considered as a very important alternative source of energy owing to its abundance on our planet. But some technical barriers, in particular effective hydrogen storage, place restrictions on the practical use of hydrogen. An attempt is made to analyze the possible use of CNTs' for storage of hydrogen. Single walled Carbon Nanotubes are synthesized by CVD method using highly ordered different catalysts namely, Platinum substituted and Vanadium substituted MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieves. Acetylene is used as carbon precursor and nitrogen as buffer gas. The CNTs are synthesized at 700-900oC by passing acetylene gas at 40sccm for 10 minutes. The final product obtained is a black solid, which is purified using hydrofluoric acid. Presence of well-graphitized carbon nanotubes is confirmed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis. The hydrogen adsorption capability of CNTs synthesized using vanadium as cat!
alyst is observed using High Pressure adsorption measurement system. The sample shows a maximum adsorption of hydrogen around 3 weight % at room temperature and 50 bar pressure.
