Abstract: This paper described a pre-experiment for the application of a high-brightness LED to a shipboard lighting system. To evaluate the adaptability of the high-brightness LED, a LED luminaire was designed and fabricated, and its illuminance, luminance, colorimetry, CCT (Correlated Color Temperature), and power consumption were compared with those of existing fluorescent and incandescent lamps. According to the experiment results, the prototype LED luminaire showed higher illuminance and 14% and 95% lower power consumption rates (than those of existing fluorescent and incandescent lamps, respectively. It is thus considered that the high-brightness LED would be suitable as a shipboard light source because it can be designed to be moisture-proof and explosion-proof and to have high lighting efficiency. To apply the LED luminaire as shipboard light source, further studies on heat dissipation, the design of the LED luminaire lens, and an EMI counterplan by SMPS (Switching M!
ode Power Supply) should be conducted.
