Abstract: Many digital image processing systems used in security and surveillance applications include information extraction capabilities to perform decision making tasks. This work presents a test platform for image processing algorithms based on the use of FPGAs as a prototyping and development technology. The system uses a Virtex-II Pro FPGA, a CMOS vision sensor, and a VGA connection in order to fulfill usual requirements of image processing algorithms. The proposed platform is used to implement hybrid hardware/software architectures for a face detection embedded system based on the Viola and Jones technique. Descriptions of hardware designs for algorithm acceleration are provided in the paper. The described implementation shows an average 66.7% execution time reduction over the equivalent software solution.
