Abstract: In this paper heterogeneous approaches of edge preserving lossy image compression are incorporated. Here two different approaches namely Decomposition of Edges without transformation (DEWT) and Preservation of Edges entirely (PEE) are developed to improve the compression ratio without degrading the quality of image using Adaptive Wavelet Transform. In both the approaches edges are transmitted to the receiver as header information to preserve the high frequency components. An edge image is obtained from the original image using four different filters such as: Sobel, Canny, Roberts, Prewitt edge detector. Then the image is domain transformed with Adaptive angular wavelets which has multi-resolution capability at n number of directions. The compressed image is reconstructed at the receiver and the valuable parameter such as Compression Factor and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio are calculated. The performance table is provided in comparison of the two proposed methods with!
the existing method of edge preserving image compression. These two different algorithms mainly reduce the coding complexity and require less number of hardware's for implementation.
