Abstract: Numerical methods such as finite elements (FE) result in a large set of simultaneous linear equations, which are generally solved by the direct stiffness approach. Indirect methods are often employed for the solution—The Davidon-Fletcher-Powell (DFP) is such a method and has been used in this Paper. The approach is based upon the principle of conservation of energy. Solutions through the direct minimization of the total potential energy (TPE) became extremely efficient and economical in the sense of storage requirements of the solution algorithm, in comparison with the FE packages. All nonlinear effects due to material properties, large displacements or local failure can be incorporated in the energy formulation. Once the energy terms have been formulated in terms of element properties, and the unknown nodal displacement due to the static load, Davidon-Fletcher-Powell algorithm is applied to calculate the set of displacements that minimize the energy
