Abstract: We propose a Joint Measurement-based Admission and Bandwidth Control (JMABC) QoS provisioning scheme for real time applications over Distributed Coordination Function (DCF), and Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) WLANs. JMABC offers a clean improvement on top of the existing WLANs as it combines the underlying DCF and EDCA with layer-3 control mechanisms. The JMABC¡¯s control mechanisms come in two folds: 1) The active traffic flows are protected from the newly admitted flows through a measurement-based admission control policy. 2) The real time traffic flows admitted are prioritized over the best-effort traffic through a packets scheduling scheme. Extensive simulation studies on throughput, packets delay, and jitter show that the proposed JMABC can effectively enhances the performance of the real time applications over standard DCF or EDCA based WLAN systems. Experimental results show that JMABC is realizable and the output is encouraging. For network oper!
ator with large-scale deployment, JMABC provides a means for QoS support with minimal Capital Expenditures (CAPEX) or infrastructure upgrade.
