Abstract: Ornamental horticulture and landscape design are gaining popularity even in regions where water is scarce and climatic conditions are extreme. The Sultanate of Oman, where this study was conducted, is located in the southeastern Arabian Peninsula where temperature reach over 45 oC during the summer months and an average annual rainfall below 100 mm. Therefore, Oman is suitable only for arid landscape, or zeriscape, that utilizes mostly native or exotic plants that are adapted to high temperatures and low water requirements. Sultan Qaboos University is the premier public university in the country. Landscape program is a new field that is now being established in the College of Agricultural & Marine Sciences. Undergraduate students majoring in Crop Sciences were enrolled in an introductory course 'CROP 2011 Ornamental Horticulture' that teaches the basics of ornamental horticulture and landscape architecture. As a requirement of the course, !
students were asked to demonstrate applied landscaping skills through a planned project in a selected area on campus. Low cost tools and software (online and offline versions) were used to teach students the principles of design and their applications. The procedure and results that will be discussed in this paper will include learning the design principles and the three stages of the project design, i.e. site and plant selection, concept mapping and computer-aided landscape designs. Effective use of low-cost tools and reflections of the student landscape learning abilities and outcomes are discussed.
