Abstract: - With a young and growing population, low per capita electricity consumption, rapid urbanization and strong economic growth, Turkey for nearly two decades has been one of the fastest growing power markets in the world. The main objective of the Turkish energy policy is primarily focused on meeting the national energy demand in a reliable, sufficient, timely, economic and environmentally sound manner so as to realize and sustain the economic and social development targets. Being accepted as a quality and a clean energy resource, planning for electricity production is considered to be vital for the development of this country. Renewable energy resources including solar energy is expected to play an important role in the electricity production as well. According to the experts, renewable sources priority list includes wind energy utilization; small hydraulic plants of less than 50 MW with or without (preferably) reservoirs, and solar thermal at the very top. When all!
the potential renewable energy sources of Turkey is considered, hydraulic and wind (Table 2) and solar (Fig. 3) energies can meet almost 1/3 of the total demand and a very high percentage of the electricity production in the country. As it is well known the most significant form of incentive used by European Union member countries for renewable source based projects is the purchasing guarantee of the electricity produced which necessitates easy access to electrical grid and a sound management of the grid. Many experts identify connection of the renewable based electricity production systems to the national grid as one of the leading obstacles. Table 4 gives the regional availability of the renewable resources and critical analysis of grid availability. A road map to the proper grid management which would pave the way for easy connection of the renewable based electricity production systems is proposed..
