Abstract: This article focuses on mapping jobs to resources with use of off-the-shelf machine learning methods. The machine learning methods are used in the black-box manner, having a wide variety of parameters for internal cross validation. In the article we focus on two sets of experiments, both constructed with a goal of congesting the system. In the first part, the machine learning methods are used as assistants for the base resource selection algorithms, while in the second part, they are used to directly select the resource for job execution. We set up two experiments with different objectives. In the first experiment, the objective was to maximize the number of jobs finished within the deadline, while in the second experiment, the objective was to minimize the job tardiness. Finally, in the first part we were changing resource selections of simple job dispatching algorithms, while in the second part, we were employing the optimization scheme of the ALEA algorithm. Th!
e results show that even with a such black-box approach of the off-the-shelf machine learning methods, we can achieve improvements or at least get comparable results.

Abstract: More than 94% steelmaking and ironmaking are released in continuous casting process. Product quality is closely related to metal cleanness and non-metallic inclusions removal. So, lliquid metal flow in ladles, tundishes and moulds is recognised to be of great importance in the quality of these products. The metal jet from the ladle to tundish tends to induce turbulent motions which can play important roles in non-metallic inclusions removal at the slag surface, thereby helping in the production of cleaner steel. To improve particle decantation, flow control devices such as dams and weirs are used. The present work is an experimental study released using similarity criteria, through Reynolds and Froude numbers. A reduced scale (1/4) water model of an industrial tundish is used to visualise and measure different parameters of a tracer flow injected in water. The analysis of residence time distribution curves (RTD) by the combined model for different configurations !
is carried out to establish the interest of placing weirs in the amelioration of inclusions flotation and decantation

Abstract: This paper present a virtual educational environment model which makes learning easier by using collaboration (and extension, team-research model) as a form of social interplay. The model represents a universe where human agents interact with artificial agents (software agents). Considering the vision of the system, it can be classified among advanced systems for it is client-oriented (student) and provides value added educational services, due to the collaborative learning attribute. The model proposes an original architecture where elements of the socio-cultural theory of collaborative learning are assigned to the artificial intelligence components (the multi-agent system). The expected results are: conceptual models (agents, learning and teaching strategies, student profiles and group profiles, communication between agents, negotiation strategies and coalition formation), software entities, and a methodology to evaluate the performance of eLearning systems.

Abstract: The goal of this study focuses on the presence of a robust method for speech detection (SPD). A robust SPD is essential part of speech recognition in non-stationary backgrounds such as in cars. It is shown that the inherent nature of banded structures appears only on speech-activity spectrogram and is robust against various types of noises. Consequently, a robust acoustic feature, namely band-splitting spectral entropy (BSE) parameter, is then proposed here. By use of the band decomposition, the banded structures are explicated more efficiently. To make the BSE parameter insensitive to colored noise such as car noise, the weighted average based noise estimator being used for tracking noise variation where the BSE decision is as an indicator of updating noise power is utilized. Experimental results show that the proposed SPD is robust against variable noise-level in cars.

Abstract: Edge preserving smoothing and image simplification is of fundamental importance in a variety of image processing and vision applications during feature extraction and object detection procedures. The construction of an optimal pre-processing filtering tool for edge detection and segmentation tasks is still an open matter. Towards this end, this paper introduces Anisotropic Morphological Levelings (AML), an advancement of the classical levelings which incorporate during its computation anisotropic diffused markers. The evaluation of the proposed scheme was carried out both by qualitative and quantitative assessment. Experimental results demonstrated that the developed AML generated an effective pre-processing tool for noise removal, corner detection and segmentation.

Abstract: Efficient power systems planning and exploration require the estimation of load diagrams at the different levels of the distribution networks. In particular, the planning of new MV/LV substations requires the assessment of their expected load curves under different exploration scenarios. The deregulation process and environment preservation constraints also compel the need of higher efficiency levels in network investments. This paper describes the methodologies adopted for the estimation of load curve diagrams in MV/LV substations. The assessment process is based on billing data (monthly energy consumption, hired power contracts, activity codes and weekday type), which is the unique information generally available at this level of the network. The most common approaches use measurements in typical classes of consumers defined by experts to construct inference engines that, most of the times, only estimate peak loads. In this paper, two different approaches are te!
sted. The first one is based on the definition of classes using a clustering algorithm and uses Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for the estimation of the MV/LV substation load curve. In the second one, an ANN is trained to output directly the load diagram estimated for each individual consumer. This article describes the adopted methodologies and presents some representative results. Performance attained is discussed as well as a method to achieve confidence intervals.

Abstract: This paper approaches the problem of restoring a faulted area in an electric power distribution system after locating and isolating the faulted block and reconfiguring the system. Through this paper we are going to explain the power system restoration technique using brute-force attack method (BFAM) and binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO). This is a technique based on the possible combination in mathematical analysis which is explained in the introduction. After isolating the fault, main concentration will be towards the reconfiguration of the restored system using BPSO. In power system if a node has fault than its near-by agents will make all the possible combination with the near-by node starting(1st) to end(nth) and then will go up to the end load and the best solution path out of these combination will be used for the restoration. Main advantage of this method is that it will give the 100% efficient result for the restoration of node considering the powe!
r availability of the feeders. Here due to fault in the system near-by agent will be affected and become useless and will go in the non-working mode. Now in order to restore these near-by loads we will give a new connection called NO (Normally Open). These connections work in such a way so that the switch will be in open state as long as there is no fault. But it will close with the load of near-by feeder as soon as fault is there and they will restore the system by taking the only available power (extra power) from the feeder through bus connection. After restoration using the BFAM, the BPSO will be used in order to provide the stable configuration. The output of the BFAM will be used as input for the BPSO and then we will reconfigure our system in order to provide the stable configuration. The effectiveness of the proposed BFAM and BPSO is demonstrated by simulating tests in a proposed distribution network and verified the results using the Matlab and C programming.

Abstract: The development of learning skills is not given attention in many classrooms in all levels of education in our education system today. We assume that students will be able to develop their own learning skills. The challenges students face in hypermedia learning environment need to be considered to help them learn effectively in this type of learning environment. METAKU is developed to assist students to apply metacognitive learning strategies, that is, planning, monitoring and evaluation during the learning process in hypermedia learning environment. This paper discusses the development of METAKU which employed the first three stages of a generic instructional design model - ADDIE which consists of the following stages: 1) Analysis, 2) Design, 3) Development, 4) Implementation and 5) Evaluation. In the analysis stage, the data was collected using a triangulation method done concurrently: a survey of student's preference of studying online versus offline; a focus gr!
oup interview to identify challenges they face and strategies they use whilst accessing and studying the hypertext materials; and a record of student's interaction with the computer using captivation software. A total of 240 second year university students in two public universities in Malaysia were involved in this study. The analysis stage provides information for stage 2 and 3 where the data collected was used in formulating the content and design of METAKU. It is hoped that METAKU will be able to help students develop learning skills in hypermedia learning environment.

Abstract: IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) is the most widely used WLAN standard today, but it cannot provide QoS support for the increasing number of multimedia applications. Thus, a large number of 802.11 QoS enhancement schemes have been proposed, each one is focusing on a particular mode. This work summarizes all these schemes and presents current research activities. First, we analyze the QoS limitations of IEEE 802.11 wireless MAC layers. Then, different QoS enhancement techniques proposed for 802.11 WLAN are described and classified along with their advantages/drawbacks. Finally, the upcoming IEEE 802.11e QoS enhancement standard is introduced and studied in detail. We are proposing in this work to adapt the concept of Quality of Service (QoS) issues in wireless LAN scenario. A deep comparative analysis has been done with leader based schemes and results have been verified using OPNET simulator.

Abstract: Total Knee Arthroplasty has been the end time surgical procedure for pain relief and movement restoration in cases of severe arthritis. The Knee implant design plays a vital role in the deciding the activity levels of a patient after total knee replacement. 90 percent of younger patients undergoing the knee replacement surgeries, the restriction is not from the subject but from the implant design. This paper discusses parameters affecting the activity levels after total knee replacement. The paper also briefs the design aspects of a novel knee design which allows the normal high flexion activity even after total knee replacement.

Abstract: This paper focuses on comparing performances of the selection combining (SC) diversity system in the presence of independent and correlated Ricean fading. For the case of correlated fading, we have presented closed form expressions for probability density function (PDF), and cumulative density function (CDF), at the output of dual branch SC. Also we have presented closed form expressions for system performances such as: average bit error-rate (ABER), outage probability (OP) and average output moments, which is the main contribution of our work. For the case of independent fading between the diversity branches, we have analyzed performances of SC diversity system which consists of two and four input branches. All obtained results are graphically presented.

Abstract: This paper proposes a highly robust method for face recognition and authentication. Techniques introduced in this work are composed of two stages. First, the feature of face is to be detected by the combined of Trace Transform and Fast Active Contour. Then, in the second stage, the Hausdorff distance and Modified Shape Context are employed to measure and determine of similarity between models and test images. Our system is evaluated with experiments on the AR, ORL and Yale face database using 1,126 face images. From experimental result, it is show that the average of accuracy rate is higher than 84%.

Abstract: Applications of biological methods and systems found in nature to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology are defined as BIONICS. The present paper describes a bionics application of shape memory alloy in construction of orthopedic implant. The main idea of this paper is related to design modular adaptive implants for fractured bones. In order to target the efficiency of medical treatment, the implant has to protect the fractured bone, for the healing period, undertaking much as is possible from the daily usual load of the healthy bones. After a particular stage of healing period is passed, using implant modularity, the load is gradually transferred to bone, assuring in this manner a gradually recover of bone function. The adaptability of this design is related to medical possibility of the doctor to made the implant to correspond to patient specifically anatomy. Using a CT realistic numerical bone models, the mechanical simulation of diff!

Abstract: The transformation of waves is one of the important subjects in coastal engineering studies. Refraction, diffraction, shoaling, reflection can be analysed with the mild slope equation over mild sloped topographies. But the extended mild slope equation can be applied to the rapidly varying topographies since it includes higher order bottom effects such as square of bottom slope and bottom curvature. In this study, extended mild slope equation has been solved with finite difference method using Mac Cormack and Point Gauss Seidel Methods together. The nonlinear wave celerity and group velocity have been used. The numerical model has been tested on elliptic shoaling area and compared with the physical experiment measurements given in literature. The predictions are in consistency with the measurements. As a result of error analysis, it is decided that the numerical can be used for the simulation of wave propagation. Numerical model has been applied to a coastal area in!

Abstract: This article proposes an adaptive coded modulation (ACM) with multi-levels qualities of service analysis, which can be used to perform physical layer functions in software radio receivers for beyond third generation systems. ACM approche employs multiple coding and modulation schemes in order to adapt instantaneously spectral efficiency to the signal-to-noise ratio variations SNR. The idea is to study transmission schemes performance which allow dynamic bandwidth sharing among various services in multimedia mobile and wireless networks in different channel environments. The aim is to select the appropriate modulation and channel coding modes based on signal quality measurement via a decision feedback block (DFB). Decision taken by the DFB block is based on different QoS parameters that depend in class and type of multimedia traffic. The DBF block is introduced in order to mitigate the channel quality fluctuations. The channel coded adaptive modulation schemes can !
be viewed as a lower complexity alternative of mitigating the channel quality fluctuations in comparison to multiple-transmitter and multiple-receiver. Implementing DFB necessitate to simulate and analyze different combinations between modulation and channel coding blocs for different data types.

Abstract: XML data are data whose structure is not necessary constrained by a schema. XML is fast emerging as the dominant standard for information exchange on the World Wide Web. The ability to intelligently query XML data becomes increasingly important. Several query languages are proposed in the literature, they are mainly different in the underlying model and in the power of expression. In this article we present and compare a family of recursive query languages for querying and restructuring XML data.

Abstract: An algorithm to solve unit commitment problem (UCP) with operational, power flow and environmental constraints under contingencies has been developed to plan an economic and secure generation schedule. The unit commitment (UC) solution for the environmental constrained problem has been formulated as a multi-objective problem by considering both Economic load dispatch (ELD) and Economic emission dispatch (EED) simultaneously. The combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) bi-objective problem is converted to single objective function by adding a modified price penalty factor. The UCP solutions without operational and power flow constraints are not practical due to secure operation of the power system network. This proposed algorithm introduces an efficient UC approach that obtains the minimum operating cost satisfying both unit and network constraints when contingencies are included. Repeated OPF for the satisfactory unit combinations for every line removal under th!
e given study period has been carried out to obtain UC solutions with both operational, power flow and environmental constraints. This proposed algorithm has been tested on IEEE 14, 30, 57, 118 buses and practical Indian utility systems. The solutions obtained are quite encouraging and useful in the economic emission environment. The algorithm and simulation are carried through Matlab environment.

Abstract: Troposphere Ozone layer acts as a shield against all ultraviolet radiation approaching the planet Earth through absorption. It was noticed in mid 80s that ozone layer has thinned on the poles of the planet due to release of man-made substances commonly known as Ozone Depleting Substances, (ODS) into its atmosphere. The consequences of this change are adverse as the harmful radiations reach to the surface of the earth, strongly influencing the crops yield and vegetation. These radiations are major cause of skin cancer that has long exposure to UV radiation. United States Environmental Protection Agency and European Community have imposed strict regulations to curb the emission of ODS and phase out schedules for the manufacture and use of ODS that was specified by Montreal Protocol in 1987. This research program deals with data analysis of ozone layer thickness and measured ultra-violet radiation that have been obtained at an altitude of 8 km from Abu Dhabi Monitorin!
g station. The ozone layer thickness in stratosphere has been correlated with measured ultraviolet radiation above the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The influence of import of ozone depletion substances for the last decade and other factors that strongly affect the ozone layer thickness in stratosphere were discussed in the final report submitted to public. The dependency of ozone layer thickness on ambient pollutant levels is discussed in detail.

Abstract: An Efficient Particle Swarm Optimization (EPSO) technique, employed to solve Economic Dispatch (ED) problems including losses in power system is presented in this paper. With practical consideration, ED will have nonsmooth cost functions with equality and inequality constraints that make the problem, a large-scale highly constrained nonlinear optimization problem. The proposed method expands the original PSO to handle a different approach for satisfying those constraints. In this paper, an Efficient Particle Swarm Optimization (EPSO) technique is employed so that faster convergence is obtained for the same results published in IEEE Proceedings. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method it is being applied to test ED problems, one with smooth and other with non smooth cost functions considering valve-point loading effects. Comparison with other optimization techniques showed the superiority of the proposed EPSO approach and confirmed its potential for!

Abstract: An important practical problem in the area of the higher-order statistical signal processing is to estimate the cumulants and polyspectra of the analyzed signal when a finite sequence of time samples is available. We cannot use the theoretical formula because they are based on the assumption that an infinite sequence of time samples is available, but this is not true in practice. In order to obtain a better estimate for bispectrum of the signal, different types of 2D window functions are used. Also, these windows are investigated in terms of the resolution and leakage effect of the indirect bispectrum estimate.

Abstract: Since 1992, research has been conducted to develop technologies, commonly referred to as electronic noses, that could detect and recognize odors and flavors. An electronic nose (e-nose) is a device that identifies the specific components of an odor and analyzes its chemical makeup to identify it. Of all the five senses, olfaction uses the largest part of the brain and is an essential part of our daily lives. Our human nose is elegant, sensitive, and self-repairing, but the E-nose sensors do not fatigue or get the "flu". Further, the E-nose can be sent to detect toxic and otherwise hazardous situations that humans may wish to avoid. An electronic nose can be regarded as a modular system comprising a set of active materials which detect the odour, associated sensors which transduce the chemical quantity into electrical signals, followed by appropriate signal conditioning and processing to classify known odours or identify unknown odours. The signals generated by an a!
rray of odour sensors need to be processed in a sophisticated manner. An odor is composed of molecules, each of which has a specific size and shape. Each of these molecules has a correspondingly sized and shaped receptor in the human nose. When a specific receptor receives a molecule, it sends a signal to the brain and the brain identifies the smell associated with that particular molecule. Electronic noses based on the biological model work in a similar manner, albeit substituting sensors for the receptors, and transmitting the signal to a program for processing, rather than to the brain. Electronic noses are useful in various fields. Currently, the biggest market for electronic noses is the food industry. Environmental applications of electronic noses include analysis of fuel mixtures, detection of oil leaks, testing ground water for odors, and identification of household odors. Potential applications include identification of toxic wastes, air quality monitoring, and mon!
itoring factory emissions. Sensors can detect toxic CO, which is odorl
ess to humans. An electronic nose has applicability as a diagnostic tool. The tragic bombings in London on the 7 July 2005 have caused many to call for bag searching at the ticket barriers on the Underground. This would cause huge delays, apart from finding the manpower to do it. A possible alternative is using an "electronic nose" to sniff out possible explosives so that only selected bags need to be searched by staff.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel colour segmentation algorithm based on the derived inherent properties of RGB colour space. The proposed colour segmentation algorithm operates directly on RGB colour space without the need of colour space transformation and it is very robust to various illumination conditions. Furthermore, our approach has the benefits of being insensitive to rotation, scaling, and translation. In addition, the system can be applied to different applications, for example, colour segmentation of human skin colour and colour segmentation for fruits (vegetables) quality control by merely changing the values of the parameters (ƒÑ, ƒÒ1, ƒÒ2, ƒ×1, ƒ×2). Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed approach in colour segmentation.

Abstract: History subject plays a vital role in instilling the spirits of patriotism among the students; to nourish and instill love and loyalty to one's country and to be a true citizen. The lack of creativity in history teaching caused process effectively and interestingly especially among young learners. Digital Game Based Learning (DGBL) approach utilizes the game as a medium for conveying learning contents. There are many models for educational games development which combined the Instructional Design (ID) and game development process. However, there is still a conflict on how to merge ID and game development effectively. Therefore, we looked into the pedagogy and game design aspects. We then propose a DGBL model for History educational games design and a development methodology which combined the ID and game development process, named DGBL-ID model. The DGBL-ID model consists of five phases: analysis, design, development, quality assurance as well as implementation and!
evaluation.

Abstract: Searching for structural similarities of proteins has a central role in bioinformatics field. Most tasks of bioinformatics depends on investigating the homologous protein's sequence or structure these tasks vary from predicting the protein structure to determine sites in protein structure where drug can be attached. Protein structure comparison problem is extremely important in many tasks. It can be used for determining function of protein, for clustering a given set of proteins by their structure, for assessment in protein fold prediction. Protein Structure Indexing Using Suffix Array and Wavelet (PSISAW) is a hybrid approach that provides the ability to retrieve similarities of proteins based on their structures. Indexing the protein structure is one approach of searching for protein similarities. We use the suffix arrays to index protein structure and use wavelet to compress the indexed database. Compressing the indexed database is supposed to make the searchin!
g time faster and memory usage lower but it affects the accuracy with accepted rate of error. The experimental results, which are based on the structural classification of proteins (SCOP) dataset, show that our method outperforms existing similar methods in memory utilization and searching speed. Our results show an enhancement in the memory usage with factor 50%.

Abstract: One of the perspectives is to understand and place sustainable development within broader picture of globalization and paradigm shift. As long as we 'neatly' divide education, sustainable development and politics we can discuss them as separate 'fields' of work. Globalization is associated with processes, such as internationalization, international relationships, unification and diversity, local and global and similar. It 'occurs' in all areas of social life and from some points of view in all scientific disciplines. The purpose of this article is to present methodological issues related to interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research and sustainable development. We can observe cross-cultural research in management, education, and in other disciplines of social sciences. Cross-cultural research, however, requires translation. If research is understood as a form of communication then cultural dimension play role in data collection stage as well as in other stages !
of research design. When questionnaires, tests and other instruments of data collection are used in different cultural and linguistic groups a question of equivalence becomes essential. Our consideration is that questionnaires like ours are subjected to double translations: from one field or discipline to other and from one language to other. In these double translations cultural equivalence basically cannot be ensured. Qualitative studies, however, can embrace cultural dimension.

Abstract: This work proposes a two-stage immune algorithm that embeds the compromise programming to perform multi-objective optimal compensator placement. A new problem formulation model that involves fuzzy sets to reflect the imprecise nature of objectives and incorporates multiple planning requirements is presented. The proposed approach finds a set of non-inferior (Pareto) solutions rather than any single aggregated optimal solution. Additionally, this developed approach eliminates the need for any user-defined weight factor to aggregate all objectives. Comparative studies are conducted on an actual system with encouraging results, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract: Nowadays, there is a growing number of e-government portals and solutions that provide integrated governmental data resources to the customers (citizens, enterprises or other public sectors). However, the administration of distributed data resources are faced with increasing challenges caused by the discovery difficulties across the internet. To overcome this, this paper puts forward the concept of a model for automatic data resource discovery in the data grid environment for e-government applications. The paper elaborates the rule of global naming, brings forward metadata¡¯s registration and storage on the naming rule, and explores how to use it to find out the long-distance data resources rapidly. The paper also sets forth the method for restraining, sending and accessing data resources repeatedly by searching ¡°comparison table¡± and using the time marker under the multiple data grid nodes, and points out that ¡°comparison table¡± should adopt the strategy of pr!

Abstract: Industrial motors are subject to various faults which, if unnoticed, can lead to motor failure. The necessity of incipient fault detection can be justified by safety and economical reasons. The technology of artificial neural networks has been successfully used to solve the motor fault detection problem. This paper develops inexpensive, reliable, and noninvasive NN based fault detection scheme for small and medium sized induction motors. Detailed design procedure for achieving the optimal NN model and Principal Component Analysis for dimensionality reduction is proposed. Overall thirteen statistical parameters are used as feature space to achieve the desired classification. Generalized Feed Forward (GFFDNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) NN models are designed and verified for optimal performance in fault identification on experimental data set of custom designed 2 HP, three phase 50 Hz induction motor.

Abstract: This paper discusses a systematic design of a Sigma-Delta fractional-N Phase-Locked Loop based on HDL behavioral modeling. The proposed design consists in describing the mixed behavior of this PLL architecture starting from the specifications of each building block. The HDL models of critical PLL blocks have been described in VHDL-AMS to predict the different specifications of the PLL. The effect of different noise sources has been efficiently introduced to study the PLL system performances. The obtained results are compared with transistor-level simulations to validate the effectiveness of the proposed models.

Abstract: Characterization of the shaly sand reservoirs by flow units is a practical way of reservoir zonation. This work represents a petrophysical-based method that uses well loggings and core plug data to delineate flow units within the most productive shaly sand reservoir of Triassic Formation in Hassi R'Mel field of Algeria. In the study of oil reservoirs, the prediction of absolute permeability is a fundamental key in reservoir descriptions and has a direct impact on, amongst others, effective completion designs, successful water injection programs and more efficient reservoir management. Usually simple linear regressions of core porosity and permeability data or empirical relationships using various log responses (e.g. porosity, clay volume and water saturation) have been used to predict permeability. These empirical methods only apply locally and ignore the fact that there is no theoretical basis for a relationship between porosity and permeability. The Triassic Form!
ations of Hassi R'Mel fields are composed of sandstones and shaley sandy with dolomite. Logs from the 8 wells are the starting point for the reservoir characterization. The general geologic framework obtained from the logs point out for discriminations within the formation. Some representative core plug data from 10 different wells are used to better understand the petrophysical framework of the formation. The plots correlating petrophysical parameters and the frequency histograms suggest the presence of distinctive reservoir trends. The permeability models are constructed and their reliabilities are compared by the regression coefficients for predictions in un-cored sections. This indicates the presence of several "hydraulic flow units" (HFU) of similar petrophysical characteristics. Analysis of core data from the Hassi R'Mel East (HRE) Field in Algeria indicates such a scenario. The predicted permeabilities for each unit show good correlations with the calculated ones fro!
m core plugs. Highly reliable future estimations can be based on the d
erived methods.

Abstract: A novel rate adaptive Channel MAC paradigm has been proposed considering perfect channel prediction and optimal rate adaptation. Simulation results reveal a significant performance gap between the theoretical rate adaptive Channel MAC and existing rate adaptive protocols- such as `Opportunistic Auto Rate' (OAR). Furthermore, we show that the proposed scheme still outperforms OAR in the presence of moderate channel prediction inaccuracies. We further extend the rate adaptive Channel MAC considering receiver diversity using two variants and present relevant analytical models. Simulation results reveal possible throughput improvement in the rate adaptive Channel MAC when we consider receiver diversity. The application shows the feasibility of the rate adaptive Channel MAC even in a Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) environment.

Abstract: Despite significant research effort, the performance of distributed medium access control methods has failed to meet theoretical expectations. Previously we have proposed the concept for a fully distributed, but non optimum opportunistic medium access control called Channel MAC. In this paper we present the Channel MAC protocol operations addressing the issues of information exchange between nodes, predicting transmission intervals and selecting transmission thresholds to achieve fairness. Although the proposed prediction scheme based on mean channel fading is simple to implement, it is imperfect leading to some performance losses. Event based simulation tool NS2 is used to analyse the performance of Channel MAC in a number of network scenarios. We analyse the performance of the proposed protocol using the performance metric; throughput, fairness, and delay. The simulation results show throughput performance improvement of up to 30\% with Channel MAC over IEEE 802.!
11 in certain multihop scenarios. Generally the proposed protocol outperforms 802.11 in all analysed network scenarios. We also show that the severe resource starvation problem (unfairness) of IEEE 802.11 in some network scenarios is reduced by the Channel MAC mechanism.

Abstract: Abstract: - The study was carried out to determine the effect of pulsating frequencies exiting from a hot circular air jet on the local heat transfer of a flat impingement aluminium plate. The velocity profile of a steady heated circular air jet and pulsating air jet at frequencies of 10 and 20 Hz was measured in the first part of the study. The same set-up was used to measure the heat flux of the pulsating jet impinging on a flat aluminium plate. The heat flux of the heated air jet impinging on the plate was measured using a heat flux micro-sensor at radial positions between 0 to 12 cm away from the stagnation point. Measurement of the heat flux was used to calculate the local heat transfer coefficient and local Nusselt Number for steady air jet and for air jet pulsating frequencies of 10 and 20 Hz. The Reynolds number used were 16 000, 23 300 and 32 000. Results obtained show that the local Nusselt number calculated at all measurement point for pulsating jet were!
higher than the local Nusselt number for steady jet. The results for pulsating jet Nusselt number was higher than the steady jet Nusselt number for the value of frequencies measured are due to the higher localised heat transfer. The higher Nusselt number obtained at localized radial positions can be due to the higher instantaneous velocity as was shown from the velocity profile plotted in the first part of the experiment. The relationship between the two results shows that higher flow velocity and turbulence intensity gives higher localized heat transfer.
