Abstract: Edge preserving smoothing and image simplification is of fundamental importance in a variety of image processing and vision applications during feature extraction and object detection procedures. The construction of an optimal pre-processing filtering tool for edge detection and segmentation tasks is still an open matter. Towards this end, this paper introduces Anisotropic Morphological Levelings (AML), an advancement of the classical levelings which incorporate during its computation anisotropic diffused markers. The evaluation of the proposed scheme was carried out both by qualitative and quantitative assessment. Experimental results demonstrated that the developed AML generated an effective pre-processing tool for noise removal, corner detection and segmentation.
