Abstract: In this paper we are concerned with the problem of estimating at real–time (on-line estimation) a highly manoeuvring target. More precisely we examine a two dimension bearings only tracking problem with a single stationary observer (e.g. a radar). This is a complex filtering problem. The solution we propose is based on the Sequential Monte Carlo methodology. Sequential Monte Carlo methodology (SMC) is a novel powerful way to deal with problems that can be expressed into a state space model. The main idea is to approximate the posterior distribution of interest (that contains all the information of the state space model) by a set of particles and weights. Up to now the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) was the standard solution to this kind of problems. In order to demonstrate the performance of the SMC methodology we compare our SMC approach to the target tracking problem with a similar approach where the EKF is applied. The obtained results are very satisfactory.
