Abstract: The availability of terrestrial Free-Space Optical (FSO) link depends on the link margin, i.e. on the maximum atmospheric attenuation the link power budget can absorb. As the maximum output optical power of laser sources is limited by safety regulation the link margin can be increased by increasing the receiver sensitivity using avalanche photodiodes (APD). The diodes operate in a relatively narrow range of avalanche multiplication. The optimal reverse voltage depends on temperature and is subject to manufacturing variance. These effects are usually compensated for in the open-loop mode, where a DC source is programmed with average datasheet temperature coefficients and individually adjusted to compensate for manufacturing variance. The paper describes the design of a receiver with closed-loop stabilization of APD parameters.
