Abstract: This paper proposes an improved vector quantizer (VQ) of line spectrum frequencies (LSF) parameters of the speech signal. In order to obtain reduced distortions, a switched split VQ having higher number of switching directions in the first stage is implemented. The complexity is reduced by using two improvements. First, in the second stage of the switched spilt VQ, the full search procedure is replaced by a faster one, namely the hybrid tree-search full- search encoding procedure. Then, a method that reduces the number of operations within the full search procedure is used. Both these improvements allow finding the nearest neighbor of the input vector. In the design process of the tree-search full-search VQ, the Voronoi cells which intersect with the rectangular cells must be determined. We propose a new method to solve this issue requiring less encoding operations compared to previous work.
