Abstract: Knowledge integration is fundamental in the Semantic Web roadmap; it consists in the process of assembling pieces of data from different sources to provide the user with complete information about a given domain. We present and compare the two main approaches to knowledge integration, namely data warehousing and query rewriting. In the scenario of the Semantic Web, in which knowledge is spread across the web and data sources can be connected one to each other is almost any way, query rewriting mediation has some advantages over the more commonly adopted data warehousing. In this paper we show that, if formal ontologies are used to describe the schema of each node, ontological reasoning can be used in schema mapping and the system can automatically translate global queries into subqueries to be passed to other nodes. We present ONTO Force as a prototype of knowledge network platform, that uses an extension of SPARQL language for knowledge manipulation.
