Abstract: An experimental investigation has been carried out for saturated pool boiling of distilled water from copper coated heating tubes of various thicknesses at atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressures. Four thicknesses of coating have been used and boiling characteristics on such surfaces have been compared with those on an uncoated one. The study includes the effect of operating parameters i.e. heat flux, pressure and thickness of coating on boiling heat transfer coefficient of distilled water on coated tube surfaces. Results indicate that, for a given value of heat flux and pressure, heat transfer coefficient of a coated tube increase with increase in thickness of coating. However, this phenomena holds true up to a particular coating thickness and decreases thereafter. Further, a criterion has been developed for enhanced boiling of distilled water on copper tube coated with copper of various thicknesses.
