Abstract: Abstract: Because of their unique physicochemical properties, engineered nanoparticles have the potential to significantly impact medicine via improving drug delivery. These same properties, however, present potential safety concerns. The purpose of this study is to explore the toxicity in nanovectors for drug delivery. We first review current nanovectors for drug delivery and then to explore potential toxicity in nanoparticles and in nanovecotrs for drug delivery. Special attention was drawn to carbon nanotubes, liposomes, fullerenes and fullerene derivatives (i.e.C60 fullerene). Finally, the mechanisms of the nanoparticle toxicity were investigated. We found out that nanovectors for drug delivery will revolutionize in vivo delivery of drugs but somehow have toxic effects which will cause some damage to the cells and organs of human body, particularly damage to the lungs. The findings show that under certain circumstances some nanovectors do cause toxicity, while !
others show no significant toxicity; therefore, the toxicity problems associated with nanovectors must be overcome before nanovectors can be more safely applied in a clinical setting.
