Abstract: The principles and characteristics of the static pressure gas lubricating non-contacting mechanical seal (SPGLNMS) are introduced. The flow field of the gas film is established by the numerical analysis of the seal end faces of SPGLNMS. The distributions of the gas film pressure, the performance parameters of the seal, such as the opening force and spillage, are obtained. The influences of the operating parameters and the seal configuration on the sealing performance are studied. The SPGLNMS has been designed and manufactured. Its working film thickness and spillage are measured to verify the theoretical analysis results. The investigation results show that SPGLNMS demonstrates the good speed adaptability¡ªit can be applied with the excellent performance at low and high speeds. The seal can be regulated and controlled online; the opening force will not be raised greatly with the number of throttle bores increasing, but the spillage of the seal increases obviously; !
the uniform pressure groove improves the sealing performance. For example, the opening forces and the stiffness are significantly raised; the spillage is reduced. The experimental results verify the theory analysis.
