Abstract: This article presents the results of experimental and analytical studies on the response of steel and aluminum square plates with different thickness subjected to blast loading. Blast wave impulses are obtained from developed theoretical relations directly (without using the ballistic pendulum) as well as dynamic blast loads. Therefore, this procedure can be generalized to all cases. Moreover, the displacement of the plates and their general failure modes are presented and are compared with experimental results. The loading applied to plates is proposed to be a quasi exponential pulse pressure representative of explosions overpressures. The theoretical solutions are developed using a rigid, perfectly plastic idealization and are exact within the context of dynamic plasticity. Large inelastic deformation is well predicted for both maximum displacement and deformation shape. The dynamic energy imparted to structures can cause material failure. The present investigat!
ion considers such a failure for fully clamped plates which are subjected to a blast loading idealized as an initial velocity distributed uniformly throughout the area.
