Abstract: ABSTRACT Virtual laboratory is a concept for monitoring/controlling experiments remotely via secure Internet/LAN/WAN/Wireless services and creating an environment for expert group discussion. It helps in better utilization of available instruments at different laboratories on sharing basis. Web enabling is the first step in this direction. Basic concept behind web enabling is to use 3-tier architecture of internet based software to provide remote access to critical machines. Creep Test laboratory has been used as test-bed for prototype implementation of this concept. Development of a prototype hardware/software suite including a web interface enables these machines to control/monitor remotely. A set of web-cams is installed for real-time physical monitoring of the experiment. The same information with periodic updates and status can also be accessed in condensed form on-demand via handheld devices, using GSM/GPRS Network. User alerts or notifications can also be !
disseminated through SMS. The ultimate goal of this project is to create a virtual laboratory where all sites can interact with one another and share information and expertise. The resulting increase in data exchange and analysis will bring about an improvement in the quality of research at all sites.
