Abstract: Since Internet technology began sweeping the world, the conceptions and boundaries of industry blurred. The phenomenon was called digital convergence. This paper use USPTO¡¦s patent data to examine the knowledge flow of business methods to determine if there are any significant differences between and within different industries and to detect the direction of knowledge flow between the different industries. Based on the empirical results, the study shows that knowledge sources of business methods may come from different industries and be more diverse than ever under digital convergence. One important finding is that industry B (Computer Hardware) is the main knowledge exporter, such as IBM; and industry F (Finance) is the main knowledge importer, JP Morgan is the representation. This study thus provides some useful managerial implications for an enterprise to improve the invention: to know what the critical technology; where to get useful knowledge; and who are the!
real or potential competitors in business methods.
