Abstract: This study presents the behavior of color spaces and wavelet base functions using lossy wavelet encoding system. The aim of lossy compression was to achieve excellent compressed image quality. Wavelet base functions used were Haar, Symlets and Biorthogonals and color spaces used were RGB, CMY, Ohta, L*u*v* and YCbCr. All of these color spaces have different properties and the choice of the color space can alter the results. In case of every test image the best compression ratio was obtained using YCbCr and L*u*v* color spaces and Haar wavelet base function. Root-mean-squared signal-to-noise ratios were also measured.
