Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to design a Takagi-Sugeno (TS) based fuzzy controller for a Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) device like the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) to enhance the transient stability performance of the power system. The UPFC controls the real and reactive power flow along the transmission lines and thereby improves the power oscillation damping. It can provide dynamic control of transmission parameters such as voltage, line impedance and phase angle. Here the versatile UPFC has been implemented in the standard nine bus system. The application of TS fuzzy controller provides a wide range of control gain variations by including both linear and non-linear terms in the consequent part of the fuzzy rule base. Several computer simulation tests on the nine bus system illustrate the efficiency of the TS fuzzy controller in damping the electromechanical oscillations and thereby enhance the transient stability of the system.
