Abstract: Underwater images are comes under the special category images because they have some special characteristics which are different from the other images. They often have a background color mostly blue or green also they often suffers from verity of problems such as limited range, non-uniform lightening, low contrast, color diminished etc. this paper deals with a novel algorithm which is n automatic algorithm mainly concerning on enhancing contrast, adjusting colors of underwater images based on the adaptive histogram equalization Technique. The histogram equalization (HE) method is widely used for image contrast enhancement. The histogram equalization uses the complete image plane. On the other side our technique i.e. adaptive histogram equalization technique first divides the complete image into small sub images and then applies histogram equalization technique on those sub images. Although the AHE it self not able to remove the noises present in the underwater ima!
ges, the algorithm uses combination of median and Gaussian filter for efficient noise filtering. Thus the algorithm not only provides image enhancement as well as provides noise filtration also. The proposed algorithm is a spatial domain approach. The spatial domain is nothing but the image plane it self. The methods in the spatial domain are based on direct manipulation of the pixels and therefore provides faster and efficient image enhancement.
