Abstract: A new algorithm of the Trapezoid method for Arabic letters contour compression is presented and compared in this paper. The compression abilities, level of introduced distortion, complexity (expressed by the computational time) of the algorithm are measured and compared with some other appreciated methods such as Ramer which has good quality and Triangle which has high speed. The mean square error, signal-to-noise ratio and number of required operations are used as the main criterions of this comparison. In this work the main idea and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is performed. Cartesian co-ordinates of an input contour are processed in such a manner that finally contours is presented by a set of selected vertices of the edge of the contour. Experimental results are obtained both in terms of image quality, compression ratios, and speedily. Finally, results of experiments and advantages and drawbacks of the analyzed method are discussed. The main advantage!
s of this algorithm are simplicity and small numbers of the arithmetic operations compared to the existing algorithms.
Keywords: contour extraction, contour compression, polygonal approximation, and Ramer and Triangle methods
