Abstract: This work intends to characterize the wind and evaluate the wind power potential of a region in the western coast of Portugal which geographical coordinates are 40º 38' of latitude and 8º 40' of longitude, being 5m above sea level. An algorithm which allows obtaining data from wind and making the project of a wind turbine into a horizontal rotation axis in a perspective of optimization was built and used. The results obtained allow the knowledge of the characteristics of wind and the wind power potential in the area of study. The Weibull distribution has indicted that the winds frequently experiencing slow speeds.
