Abstract: Linear time-frequency integral operator with finite supports in time and frequency is often employed to characterize the mobile radio channel. This fixed time-bandwidth resolution approach presents an eigenstructure that may not be very adequate for representing channel variations especially in high data and high mobility applications. We present mobile radio channel characterization using linear time-scale operators which arises primarily from the natural extension of basic concepts of time-scale representations of affine type to the analysis and representation of the various phenomena associated with the mobile radio channel. The concepts of delay-scale spreading function and operator are discussed and used to derive the delay-scale power spectrum and novel parameters like the delay and scale profiles, as well the coherence time and bandwidth.
